My brother reckons that my van, an 01 peugeot partner 1.9 straight has unusually high revs at idle. I've never thought this myself, but i'm just wondering, what are the correct revs at idle? I have heard somewhere that these vans have a high gear ratio, but that shouldn't factor when the van is idle. The van idles at 1000.

Usally 1000rpm when cold and around 800 when warm....these have a mechanical pump and the idle can be adjusted if need be...:)
If its running @1000rpm all the time maybe check and see if the cold start is
    is stuck on.

Most berlingo/partner vans with the 1.9 non turbo engines i've come across over the years have a high and fairly harsh idle. The idle speed is adjustable on the pump. The pump timing could also be slightly off but I really wouldn't worry too much about it.
