Basicially, it's an electronic gate that goes between your battery and your motor. In most AEG's, when you press the trigger, it activates a mechanical gate (Metal contacts connect, completing the circuit), a mosfet does the same thing electronically, and with much less resistance (Meaning more of the power reaches the motor).

The more advanced ones offer some cool features too, like active breaking (When the motor needs to stop it is done electronically instead of being aloud to spin out, which would improve the life of the motor and the spring), some can also be set to vibrate when the battery power is low (Useful for lipos) or even adding features like three round burst to your AEG.

The most advanced ones are fully programmable.

Advanced Wargames Systems (AWS) airsoft do some pretty impressive looking stuff - and from what I've garnered on Arnies, have a very good reputation. I'm keeping an eye out on their upcoming stealth mosfets which from what I've seen from pictures posted on airsoftmechanics, are absolutely *tiny*.

edit: apologies; missed the "Irish retailers" requirement.
