Toshiba DVR19DTKB2 Mpeg2 or Mpeg4?

    Hi all

My mother decided to enter the 21st century by "investing" in some new equipment to record her soaps etc and prepare for the coming digital changeover. She went to power city in drogheda expecting to get some good advice and a good deal. The reason I am posting here is that i think she got neither.

The young lad in power city sold her the above model toshiba dvd/video combi unit with a built in dvb-t and it plays divx etc. when i initially saw the specs i said it was exactly what she was looking for but When I was asked to set it up, I new something was wrong.

Anyhoo, Setting up the analogue channels from her aerial worked perfect but the dvb channels have no picture, only sound. I am geting the full epg.

After hours of changing scart connections, co-ax leads, settings and sifting thru endless google pages, I am still at a loss.

The only theory i have is the so called "expert" in power city sold her a mpeg2 model(for the uk) instead of a mpeg4 model(ROI).
Didn't think that happened anymore since they changed so long ago.

Hopefully this was a mistake and not power city taking advantage of an old womans ignorance.

Can anyone here confirm one way or another if this model toshiba works for them or not.

Any advice/help would be well appreciated

    LAJ

I would reckon this product is Mpeg2 and not Mpeg4. If she dont have it long bring it back and Explain to the guy that sold it to her that it is not suitable for Irish DTT channels

I think i will have to bring it back for her as she probably wont be able to explain why it does not work for her.

Oddly enough, the digital aertel seems to work flawlessly. Does this mean it is MHEG5?

    Would a mpeg2 dvb-t support MHEG5?

Yes, it's the UK freeview standard.

Yes tell your mother to smash it over his head.

These products are not suitable for sale in Ireland.

They should know that. They have no PVRs themselves for DTT.

They do sell the Walker STB and Walker TV which receives DTT but thats it. No PVRs. An "Irish" chain should know better than stock Freeview (MPEG2) products. Freeview HD (MPEG4) would have worked.

If she receives DTT from N.Ireland and Irish DTT she could use a Freeview HD PVR. There are plenty discusssed over at pvrjunction.co.uk.

That model is definitely only MPEG2 (and VHF/UHF analogue, soon obsolete of course), as I've tested it.

There is no MPEG4 equivalent on the market that I'm aware of.

Well they do actually its part of the Toshiba Regza range. I posted the 3 units that I came across about 2 years ago (think I can find it!).

As I remember it was very expensive. Anyway DVD combos are not the way to go. Just get a HD Combo PVR or buy a Freesat HD+ if you dont want to receive/record Irish DTT stations.

Hmm, I must test one again tomorrow, as last one I tried didn't work (unless model was slightly older). I thought the Regza name only applied to their TVs? Anyway, if it's MPEG4, that's good news.

You are right it wasnt a Regza it was the Vardia Series
