Depressed at 17

I am almost 18, in Leaving Cert and it feels like since Second Year I have suffered from depression. It comes and goes but lately it has been getting worse.

I feel like shíte. The stress of the leaving cert doesn't help. Both my parents have suffered from depression in the past and now they are having money problems, it's fair to say my homelife is tough.

My friends don't know about how tough things are financially at home. My close friends know I suffer from low sel esteem, though I cam confident on the outside and try to hide it. I am obese and hate the way I look. I have never had a boyfriend and the thoughts of who I'll bring to the grad next year are getting me down.

I don't want to talk to a counsellor and there is noone in school I could talk to.

    Help.

I know you said you don't want to talk to a counsellor but I think this is your best option. Where else do you expect to get help? You could talk to your doctor either.

Depression is a clinical state which only your dr can diagnose. Yes we all go through crap patches which are a struggle in our lives, which get us down and through sad patches but just because we are going through them does not make us depressed.

If you are living with parents who are currently depressed then I suggest you see if there is a support group near you for family memebers who live with a person suffering from depression www.aware.ie

As for your own weight issues, there is a forum here where you can get help to turn your diet around and make better food choices. http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/forumdisplay.php?f=982

If your parent can't be there for you to be your sounding boards and give you support then you need to find that else were, if you dont have aunts/uncles who can help then talk to your year head in school and see if they can do a referal for you to berandoes in your area.

The reason I don't want to go to a counsellor is because I have trust issues. Connected to a incident a year ago and another 2 weeks ago.

I can't go to any of my teachers, they are mainly lovely people but I know them. Same with my year head! She is my favourite teacher but again I know her too well.

So your looking for someone who you dont know. Maybe you should ring samaritans, or 1life?

They can be very helpful and listen to your problems. Plus you dont have to tell them who you are!

Are your parents aware of how you are feeling?
I know money trouble can make things very difficult but the family unit should still exist. This is where you find security, love and self worth which no amount of money can give you.
