Good, reliable diesel car(2500-3500euro)

    All,

    I’m looking for a good reliable, cheap to run diesel car 2001-203 (if such a thing exists)! I’m looking at keeping the car for 3-4 years putting about 20,000 miles a year on it. I’ve been looking at a number of Ford Mondeo’s on the web but they all seem to be priced pretty strongly, are they in demand at the moment or does that apply to all diesels? Also is there much difference between the TDDI and the TDCI engines reliability wise? Are both engines prone to injector problems? Clutch and DM flywheels seem to be a problem as well. Does only a small percentage suffer from this or are you pretty much guaranteed to have to replace the DMF eventually? Also I’ve seen a few DMF’s replaced with Solid flywheels – is this lightly to cause problems with something else in time – engine/gearbox?

    Any views/advise/recommendations appreciated. Thanks.

    I would go for something thats german.

    Maybe a Volkwagen Golf / Bora 1.9 TDi

    Reliable and easy run depending how you drive it.

    Have a 99 focus diesel, just as reliable as the mondeo but cheaper, great car.

    Great car and the fast it hasn't the image of the German cars makes it cheaper to buy

    Agree, my father has a 04 one which he has had for a few years, engine is very strong, he hasn't had a problem while I had a few small things go in my diesel fabia vrs over the same time.Its very very comfortable and though 130bhp doesnt sound like much in a car of its size, it has no problem with power, it has a decent amount of torque and good gearing keeps it in the torque band.Its a detuned engine from the 320d I think.

    Indeed it is and its been fitted with a Mitsubishi Turbo so it hasn't the same issues as BMW's Turdo Diesel engine

    There is an easy way around the DMF problem that makes the car nicer and easier to drive, especially in the city.

    The solution? Buy an automatic.

    Peugoet 406 2.0 HDi, very comforable cruiser and should be able to pick up one of the last examples on your budget. Last run models were kitted out well too and they were a better car than the 407 that replaced it.

    Auto is suppose to be fabulous in them too, if there is one thing I dont like about the 75 its the clutch, its very heavy even by diesel standards.Its the ideal car for an auto box in fairness, big cruiser with a bit of torque.

    Thanks all for the comments. Not really sold on the Rover 75. Not many of them for sale. Would getting replacment parts not be difficult?
    Anyone have any thoughts on either the Mondeo 2.0 TDDI/TDCI or Peugeot 406 2.0 HDI??

    There is no issue getting replacement parts for the 75. Plenty of diesels out there if you look, try even looking up north, only a short hop away. Don't be put off one purely on the basis that some people perceive it as an old man's car, get the right one, it'll have everything, TV, Navigation, Heated Electric Leather Seats, Xenons, Sunroof, PDC, you name it. Best of all, the 115 Bhp engine remaps to 150, and the 130 Bhp to 170. Plenty of power there with good economy, and reliability!

    Body parts such as bumpers and headlights for the facelifts are hard to come by but all mechanical and electrical parts are readily available.
    Add the synergy 2 to the diesel and you have a swift machine.
