Do companies usually keep you on?

Is your contract just for 3.5 years or is it full time and they can't let you go if you complete your exams?

You're contract is just for the 3.5 years. If you do well they will keep you on, if you're middle of the road, then they wont. All depends on the economy too. Big 4 have been around 50% retention for the last 2 years

With all training contracts there will be c. 1 year probation where they can let you go without cause, but I have not heard of that happening. If you fail to complete your exams within the specified number of sittings (usually two attempts) they can let you go too. Otherwise they could let you go for the same reason as any other job, but I've not heard of it happening and I reckon it is rare.

The Big4 used to keep almost everyone who wanted to stay after their contract but it is a different world these days. Whether you get kept on or not is a function of your performance and business need. But that is a very long time away if you are starting out and I wouldn't worry about it.
