    hey guys,
i'm looking for a decent od pedal for christmas, and i was wondering does anybody know what's the best pedal for under 100 quid. i'm looking at more of a fender blackface overdrive tone, think srv or more of a blues kind of tone, a tube amp just after breaking up. if anybody's got any ideas or have a pedal they love, feel free to tell me :pac:
    cheers,
    stephen

    Ive always had a Boss SD-1 ,

I use it to push a slight overdriven valve amp though .

    I like it

Most of them are actually pretty good at surprisingly accurate to the sound of a chimey tube amp. I have a Boss SD-1, it's kind of good but lacks low end. Bad Monkey's a great bet.

Tube Screamer off adverts.ie is your best bet by a very very long way in my opinion

Sounds like an Ibanez or Maxon Tubescreamer would suit you.

I have a Boss Bluesdriver and I love it (and usually don't like Boss pedals at all).

I'm hoping to get one of these soon to go with the BD, I reckon this guy might be your best bet: http://www.jimmybehanfx.net/effects-pedals/tubescreamer

The cheap Biyang TS copies are supposed to be pretty good for the money (about 40 quid on adverts) but I've never used one.

I have used a few expensive boutique pedals and since sold most of them, and always use a Boss Blues Driver... its probably the best pedal boss make, and i would highly recommend you try one.

Another happy SD-1 user here. The only criticism I'd have is a slightly 'boxy' sort of muffled tone, but I've heard this can be rectified by snipping out a particular component (a diode I think), no soldering required. I'd like to try that some day, but for now I'm happy.

I don't get how anyone could 'not like' Boss pedals.

Boss OD-3 seems to get reviews from the rocker people.

Also, some of the Boss pedals can be modified to sound the business.

Searched around for a simple mod like that, haven't found one. Apparently it filters off the low end to make the mids more prominent which is kind of weird. I'd rather it didn't though.

    Perhaps I remembered incorrectly...

I found this though, if anyone fancies grabbing a second hand SD-1 and turning it into a TS808

Pron, that looks the tits... With absolutely zero idea what I'm doing and no prior knowledge, how feasible is it to start modding pedals? And even then, which would be easier: Modding pedals or starting from scratch with the DIY kits?

I'd say mod one. That plan there is only 5 modifications, only 4 of which require soldering. 8 joints should be no problem if you take your time. If you wanted to go DIY, start with a ready-made kit of an LPB-1 or a simple fuzz or something. I've never done it, but from reading walkthroughs and write-ups, it doesn't seem too hard once you're a patient solderer.
