Folks.. my car radio has gone gaga. :/ I can't get it to play the radio, CD or even a tape. Says its playing away, but no audio coming out of it. My car kit works fine so I know the speakers work okay.

Its a 03 Avensis. Iv a fair bit of traveling next week so would love to have the radio back working.

Any ideas what could be wrong?

I have had this problem about 3 times with mine. It comes back after a while, sometimes the next time you switch on the car, sometimes the following day even after driving 300 miles. I have no idea what causes it but try switching the ignition on and off a few times and see what happens.

Its been gone over a week, but I haven't been driving the car and was only told today :/

    OK

On the 2nd time it happened mine, it was gone a few days so I decided to whip out the stereo and try and figure out what was wrong. Typically, before I got the flaming thing out, it started working again.

I have the car from new in 03 like yours. it has happened 3 times I think. the last time was last week. It was exactly as you described on the way to work so I decided I would check it at lunchtime...... it was back working perfectly!!

Can't understand it but in my case at least, it comes back eventually. You could have a look on the toyota owners club website and see if there is some solution though tbh, I have never seen a thread on this topic.

Is it a aftermarket car kit? I have a parrot in mine, and the odd time the mute function of the stereo doesn't seem to knock off. Come back usually in a minute or two..

Went into one of the car accessory places today, they think I need a new radio but to call back Monday when the technician is in.

As for ripping it out... not so sure about that, seems like a fairly big task.

My car kit fitter wasn't about today but ill ask him Monday to check if thats at fault, perhaps muting the radio for some reason. But I drove for 4hrs straight today and the radio is still dead, but can make/receive calls okay. Its a Bury CC9060.

Disconnect the mute wire going to the radio. Most likely to blame. Removal isn't hard. ONly tool needed is a long 10mm socket

I agree that removal is easy Colm, but I don't have the mute wire in mine connected to a car kit (though I do have a car kit installed) so can't be that in my case.

Is it up to 03 or 03 on?

Chances are if the phone kit plays through the cars speakers, then its at fault.

03 on new, so the new avensis! Any guide online for hacking away at radios?

You need to remove the trim piece with the cupholder. A sharp tug on the holder will unclip it, the ashtray panel just pulls out too.

Brought it into a small business which deals with electronics and fitted the handsfree unit, and they diagnosed it as having the outputs gone on it. A crowd in Dublin will repair for €125. Haven't decided what to do yet, looking for a second hand one really. :)
