After a year of training, today wast first day out with dog.... After 10 min she started showing major interest in the ditch..... Flushed a cock.... I threw up the gun.... Just nipped him and the cock was a runner.....she followed the line and retrieved him alive from a big bunch if brambles..... very cuffed with the dog.... She was flawless....

first dig to a young terrier, first catch for a pup lurcher, first flush and retrieve for a springer, first time a young hound packs in and calls it first on a line.....................................no better feeling in the world.

Nice one! If I had to choose between a ramble with the gun or the dog, the dog wins every time! Well done, hope the rest of the season goes even better.

Am in the same boat with a pup at the moment, putting a lot of time in getting him working right, so this season is out for me, Had him out for a walk today and seen a hen cross further up the lane and a cock run on up it. He marked where the hen crossed to a T and was going mental following the scent of the cock. Looking promising. Best of luck with the pup and may ye have many a good hunt and retrieves in the years to come.

First cock pheasant shot over my young springer (17 months) old on the first aswell. Hunted really well for the afternoon and deserved a bird. He was a difficult pup who gave trouble trying to get him on the whistle and retrieving. I was at my wits end on a number of occaisions with him. He is now looking like one of the best dogs that I have ever owned but only time will tell. His stanima is not great yet so about 3 hours is all I give him and I did not hunt him this weekend so I am going to try and keep it at 3 hours every second week. This will stop a young dog from over exerting himself and also keep him hungry for the hunt.
