There might be a crack in the tooth or most likely there has been leakage back into the root canal causing recurrent infection. Root canal may need to be redone and a crown placed. Best to get it tested and X-rays and see what the options are. Did the dentist mention the need for a crown when the root canal was done???

The dentist said it would need to be crowned alright but didnt press it with me, that pain is gone now by the way. I was getting the pain a month or 2 ago aswell, at that time there was an orthotic band on it which has since been removed, the dentist that did the root canal did an xray of the tooth and he said it looks fine to him

I second fitzgeme! it's unusual enough after 18 months to get an infection but not impossible. Another thing to bear in mind is you could have increased sensitivity due to the size of the filling. Defo get a crown if it is a molar as it will help you to hang on to your tooth longer. Your molars do a lot of work when you eat and having a large cavity filled can weaken it a lot. I'm going back to get my first crown on Monday in NI! Good luck!

I've just had the same problem, went to the dentist and he said that the root canal treatment did not work i.e the tooth is not dead. This can happen often, it doesn't mean the root canal was done badly. But he took x ray and noted that if I left it any longer, the bone in my tooth would pass up into my nose and as a result and infection would occur. Your best bet is to get the treatment done again, because the infection will eventually happen. ..

    Teeth in pain..nothing worse:(

I think im getting the same problem. I broke my two front teeth 2.5 years ago. And got one root canalled 2 years ago now. The root canalled tooth occasionally (every 3months or so) gets this dull sore feeling when it is pressed. It lasts 3-5 days then goes again.
I just have the tooth capped at the moment with resin, but plan getting a proper crown. But am worried that I might need an implant now cause of this slight pain issue.
Is it possible that I will just need another root canal, and then a proper crown can be put on top of it?

Ok think im just going to go to a dentist. Its gotten alot worse since I posted this morning. Either that or Ive gotten a headache!
Can all dentists do crowns easily? Or are some better than others? I know i'll need one at some stage so I might as well get the tooth checked out and crowned at the same time?
Is there any benefit to Cerec crowns other than the time convenience?
