I can't remember the gap I put in mine but it caught grey crows. One tip I'd give you is to use 2"x2" weldmesh, cable tie it all together. That' makes it light and easily portable.

I've been asked to hit the Grey Crows hard on my Father in laws farm in Mayo next spring so I find these threads really informative - thanx guys:)

A "four banger" is something I reckon would suit you better. Basically a large Larsen with 4 catch compartments.

Cheers John - indeed the terrain we're talking about is not unlike your own setup in Connemara, only its right by the coast:)

Now that I think of it, Terrier was having some success with ladder traps.

Any tips on placing these lads. Out in the middle of a field with good visibility, close to ditch etc

Built one last year and had limited success with it but it could have been how we were placing it

If you can identify a flight line it normally makes things much easier.. Where I am it's easy as they fly directly from the woods to the coast most days or along the coast as the day progresses.

I find it's all about the bait the more the better and of course the colder the weather also helps

Thanks Terrier, we put ours on the farmers land who gave us permission and we got nothing despite a lot of bait. No appreciable flight line unfortunately but we weren't expecting huge numbers or anything

I think we have it too close to the ditch trees over hang it a bit and it is hard to see

It catches everything mate but i would advise put it up in the dark and empty it in the dark and make it as light as possible so you can move it around. You have to empty it everyday because they actually do figure out how to get out.We caught a buzzard in our one the other day.Our record is 12 magpies in one day by using only eggs in false straw nests.

will give that a try cos im having no luck with larsen trap, will make it in sections with chicken wire because have a couple rolls lying around.how many eggs did you put in nests and how many nests and did you put any outside trap?

Im trying to decide how big to make mine, dont want to make it too big as it would be a nuissance to move about (even if I did cable tie it together) and also dont want to make it too small that I would only catch a few birds and too small that I wouldnt be able to get into it to empty it of its prisioners

just a couple of eggs in two or three little piles of straw, just to give effect. The greys can be a bit more wary , we got a sheep carcase left it out for a day or two and let them feed on it then when it was dark we put the trap around it and we found that successful, make your trap in sections made from 2x1 and heavy grade chicken wire and just cable tie it together with 10mm cable ties .Works fine.

Does it need to be so big, and have the ladder in a valley?

For a 8' x 8' x 6', it will take 10 sheets of 8'x4' weld mesh, but I have a plan for a smaller one that uses only 4, although it's only 4' x 4' x 7' - I'll try to upload a picture to another post, this is my third attempt to post this and I think it was the pictures fault

Will this trap work or would it just be a waste of time?

Only have a small area to cover and i could use a magpie or 2 for the larsen, and I've been watching a couple of greys all day at the neighbours sheep feeder

Picture was too big, this smaller one will have to do

Hi .50(MOA), don't think that will work as captives will be able to climb/fly up the 3ft side and back out through the ladder. Regards, Dave

That's what I had thought but i wasn't sure, maybe if I had a valley, keeping the whole thing the same size, it could work, it just wouldn't be a high on the sides, I'll do another wee sketch tomorrow.

Is there the chance it could be too small?

The idea of the ladder trap is to catch big number's fast. 4 foot square is to small, for best results make it around 8 foot square and 6/7 foot high.

That's what I wanted to know, I didn't want to waste my time just to save a few euro, I'd be best with spending that bit more. 10 sheets of weld mesh it is.
