    Hi there

Can you earn much money in road races throughout Ireland?

How about the prizes for over 40s runners?

You could probably win back your entry fee and money for the bus back home each week in the BHAA races or similar, and a few pairs of socks. M45 for some reason always seemed to be a faster category than the M40's.

My old man when he ran used to win the usual household items such as bed linens, cutlery, dishes, clocks etc. There was never money tho?

He would have been banned if he accepted cash. Good old amaturism and all that. I've won the princely sum of €25 in the last two years:D. €40 if you include vouchers. I doubt if you'd make much of a living running in Ireland.
What race has the top prize money -the Dublin Marathon - €15,000?

Reading about that guy who admitted to taken EPO. He used to make a fair bit even in the over 40s.

Think there was price money for the 1st Americans to come home.

He was running 2.15 marathons though.

The only Irishman to run quicker than that since Mark Carroll in Martn Fagan in Dubai in 2008.

To answer the original question, there;s lots of money to be made on the roads if you are fast enough. How quick are you?

If you won the Limerick or Dingle Marathons this year, you'd have won some crystal ...and a hoodie (Dingle). If you sold them then......

    Oh....Money...naw those races don't do money.....or other significant prizes..................

I'm 38 and only back running, after 17 years, since August. Currently I'm building up the mileage. This week I have ran a series of hour runs.

Started to do a couple of short tempo runs and fartlek.

I'll test myself in some cross country races in December and in the New Year.

In this case, you will struggle to win anything. Get your 5k potential on the roads down to 14.30 or so and you can go pot hunting in road races.

For reference sake, a mate of mine won a BHAA 10k road race recently in 33 minutes (give or take) and picked up 30 euro for the effort.

I kept looking for money on the road on my jog this morning, but it was too dark. :(

I actually found 10 euros out running a while back but I was on a PB (so I thought) so I didn't stop. Went back 30 mins later and it was still there! Happy days :D

I regularly find small change while out running. My biggest finds were a) about 15 years ago, on a Fri night found £10, the following day found 3 x £5 and the next day got £20 :D, and b) about 7 or 8 years ago, found a 500 Dinar Yugoslav note (Yugoslavia was long gone then - anyway, for all I know, 500 Dinar was worth tuppence).

Never found any other notes, though I did come across 17 x £1 stg coins in Lanzarote a few years back. Passing a crowd of people waiting to get on a tour bus, I spotted a £1 coin and stopped...lo and behold and there were 16 others strewn around. Everyone was looking at "El Loco" scrambling around muttering "Libres Ingles". I jingled all the way back to the apartment.:D Locals probably still talking about "El Loco"
