    Hi all, a few problems.

My XP just decided it wouldnt boot one day so i decided to install ubuntu, the windows partition is still there and i can access most of my files except aboout 30 important ones. Ubuntu ant open them as it says i dont have permission, however there are no permissions set on the files so i dont understand!

So is there anyway I can make a boot disk for XP without the CD and boot to windows so i can get my files?!

    Cheers!

I doubt it's permissions on the files, unless files are encrypted most OS's don't care about other OS's permissions, eg, ext3 driver in windows will open /home/root happily (of course you need newer driver for newer ext3 due to larger inodes)

But if you can see the files and they have an X on the icon then open a terminal ( aka command line ) so you can run with root ( aka administrator) rights

    Applications / Accessories / Terminal
    then type in
    sudo nautilus
    and press enter

If you can't see the files then it's because you don't have permission to open the drive, check again in Places to see what the exact message is.

What type of files are they ? In case you need to install a reader (only really applies to non-home user stuff)

Windows licensing agreement doesn't allow for a live XP CD , as that would be too easy. BartPE exists, I've not used because linux live CD's don't have problems with licenses.

If the only thing broken in windows is the boot sector (or boot.ini ) you can make a bootable disk on another XP machine , you format a blank floppy then copy ntldr , ntdetect.com and boot.in to it - might work with CD / USB but that's a whole different way to kill time - you should copy boot.ini from your machine, the other files from the other machine. This disk won't work if there is any other problem with the windows install, it's purely a one trick pony. Then again I did have a server booting from floppy for 4 years because life's too short to figure out some stuff.

Thanks a lot for taking the time for that Capt'n!

Ill try the boot disk when i get a chance!

The exact message that still comes up is:

    Could not load image '1.jpg'.

Error reading from the file: Permission denied

They are all jpgs. The strange thing is i can open every other file on my hard drive except those 30 or so pics!!

Fingers crossed i can manage to boot windows!
