School of Phenomenal Memory - Real?

    Hi Guys!

    Quicky for ya!

I was wondering if any of you have hard of the "School of Phenomenal Memory"
    There website is here www.pmemory.com

    Does this look legit?
I am considering purchasing a course as I have used memory techniques before and know they work. However I am skeptical on if this is real or not. They are claiming that after finishing there course you will be able to memorize a book word-for-word. This seems extreme!

Anyone have any past-experience with these or heard anything about these?

And before you tell me to, yes I have googled around however most discussions about it are from like 2006, 2007.

    Thanks!
    Gavin

EDIT: Please read all the posts before replying. Otherwise you may sound stupid. :)

There's nothing new about memory techniques that will give you an apparently super memory. It's one of the main techniques behind a lot of Derren Browns tricks. These guys probably aren't the best in the world but it's a fairly simple principle that anyone could teach weather or not you can be arsed to put the time into learning it is another thing.

This guy's been around doing the same thing for a lot longer...

I would be definitely willing to put the time in.

However I probably will be doing it in the summer as I'm doing my Junior this year and can't do both. I suppose this will help my Leaving though and that's what really matters :)

    Thanks for the clarification.

You're 15 and can afford to waste over €300 on a scam? Everybody knows that a website like that is a precursor to a scam. If they have to spend pages explaining the same thing over and over, chances are there's nothing behind it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 47 ITDemo

Well no I can't afford to waste €300 on it. (It's only €200 btw)
That's why I am on here making sure I don't waste it.
I am willing to pay €200 if it is real. In my opinion it would benefit me my whole life.

Also, see as the two people above my last post said, memory techniques are real. I have actually used one myself by Dominic O'Brien. Problem is that it is really old. This one here uses GMS. Which is a known, relatively new memory technique.

    Don't give them your money!

Every technique they are trying to sell you is available already in books from Amazon etc. Read the reviews to find the ones that suit you.

Repeat: Don't give them your money!

PS: Don't give them your money!

Maybe just a few things to back it up. It seems people here think I am a complete gob****e.

    - They show up quite high on Google when you search anything to do with Memory Techniques eg. "Memory Development", "Memory Improvement" etc.

    - They have been around since from what I have found as early as 2006. I think they would be proven as a scam by now.

    - They have a really active forum. Members of all ages, races and backgrounds are there. I highly doubt the maker would go to that much effort to fake a website.

    - They allow you to use paypal as a payment choice. They will not see my Credit Card number or anything. All they get is my e-mail.

Now with all that out of the way.
    Anyone have anymore contributions?
I would really appreciate it if anyone has past experience with this. They seem well known on the internet.

    Thanks again. :)

Just saw your post now so my last one isn't about you. :)

I am looking on Amazon at the moment.

Do you know of any good books?

    Thanks!

High on google just means high click through rates.
They are most likely not a ''scam'' in the usual sense of the word but will send you plagiarised material for an obscene price.

    Nice scam, ITDemo.

You're a junior cert student? So you're 14? You registered for this site in February 2008, which would mean you were what, 11 or 12? Last time I checked they weren't handing out phone contracts to 11 or 12 year olds, and there certainly weren't 11 or 12 year olds going around with iPhones in 2008. Post from ITDemo about his Iphone in February 2008

In short, you're a farce and this is spam. I hope nobody is duped into passing money your way. You should be ashamed of yourself, what kind of grown adult would try to pass themselves off as a juniour cert student in order to sell a product?. Desperate.

The rules on the boards.ie terms of use state
    3. Who can join Boards.ie?
    People under 13:

Boards.ie is not directed at children younger than 13 and is offered only to users 13 years of age or older. If you are under 13 years old, you may not register with or use Boards.ie. Any person who registers with Boards.ie represents to us that they are 13 years of age or older.

So you broke the sites rules to post here, about an iphone you supposedly had at 12, and are now talking about the security of your credit card numbers?

    Scam.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 47 ITDemo

    Okay I broke boards rules.
If you want I will make another account now that I'm fourteen?

I was not gonna say "My dad's credit card".

FFS. Man how much proof do you want. My facebook? To see me in person? God.

EDIT: You know what a Mod can close this thread. I'm gonna just go buy a book on memory. I found a good one on Amazon thanks to Donkey Oaty.

BTW: BillShorey, I'm actually quite flattered you think I am older. Means I am doing something right. Thanks babe! :*
It's a pity I can't ask a question without being flamed because of my age.

Anyway yeah as I said. Mod you can close/delete if you want... Or leave it here for ****s and giggles. :D

Thanks to everyone that replied properly.

    Scam.

You seem to know a lot about this site for someone of 11 posts, second account perhaps?

Leave the chap alone, he's asked a question about 1 particular site, when people stated it was a scam he then inquired as to what books would be useful from Amazon.

I signed up today so had to read the t&c's, which is where I got that quote. Also, all vBulletin based forums have a 13+ disclaimer in the t&c's in some form of another. You're welcome to check this if you doubt me?

There's a lot that simply doesn't add up. A self-proclaimed geek would know there's a lot of better ways of verifying the legitimacy of a website than where it appears on google search or whether it takes paypal or not. Not to mention the rest.

Ok, this didn't go so well.
Will leave open for now but expect it to not make it through the night.

Everyone, it may not be a scammer. Please be courteous.

    Finally...
I'm am going to go back to the matter at hand.

Does anyone know of any good books on Memory Techniques?
    Thank you! :D

I have very deep suspicions about the basis for this thread.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 47 ITDemo

A student wanting to do well in exams by bettering his memory?
    Yeah that's unrealistic...

Maybe I will ask another forum this question if all the people on here just want to flame.
I guess I was wrong about Boards...
When I met the guy who started Boards he seemed nice. Haha!
Oh well it's not his fault.

PS. Before someone asks I met him at Games Fleadh. He was at one of the talks. Proof? Boards started out as a forum about Quake.

apparently is the key word here

you can learn how to memorise lists of stuff

but if the stuff you want to memorise isn't in a list then not so good

On the off chance the this isn't a case of identity theft it might be best for the OP to remove personal details.

    Alright.
    Thanks for the reply :)

PS: Yeah I'm just about to remove my details now.
I figured the mod was gonna remove it anyway like he said he might.

But yeah I'll clean up my posts.
    Thanks.

It's not just for memorising lists, there are special techniques for just lists and remembering numbers, but there are more general ones.

oh yeah but there does seem to be an over emphasis on lists compared to how relavent they are after you've done the leaving cert

Some years ago I read a great book on memory techniques with some praticial and useful techniques although I cant remember the name of it. It had a blue cover. Although it could have been green.

This, there are multiple books available on memory techniques online that would be just as good.

I bought a Harry Lorayne memory book for a tenner when I was in school. Looking at the pdf on that site it seems to be the same idea. The techniques are good for learning lists and numbers but not so great for more abstract stuff. Learning an entire book word for word would be an incredible amount of work. It's good for phone numbers, pin numbers and passwords though. Could be useful in school for memorizing dates and things but you'd be mental to pay €200 for it.

IIRC you can get books like this at your local library

The leaving cert itself isn't really relevant once you leave school. Having a few good memory techniques under your belt would be 10 times more useful in your daily life than 60% of what you learn in school.
