Postage to Ireland

I have been buying on ebay for many years. Recently I am finding a lot of sellers who say, on the listing, UK only. In the past I would email the sellers & the majority would post to Ireland.

Now I find that most listings say that they only post to the UK in the FAQ's but most will still post.

The latest development is specific wording, on the listing, that says the seller will not post to Ireland. So it is specific to Ireland.

Is this an attempt by ebay to get us to use ebay.ie rather than ebay.co.uk. ?

Is the specific wording written by the seller? if so it is not anything to do with ebay. Can you post a link to an example?

It could be sellers who frequently get emails from Irish people, some US sellers are specific in listings and ask you not to ask if they will send outside the US.

    http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Mens-Berghaus-Olive-Boots-NEW-89-NOW-59-/150514147122?pt=UK_Clothing_Menswear_MensShoes_GL&hash=item230b579f32

    Look just below the price.

It restates it in the postage section:

    Postage and packaging
Item location: Glasgow, Glasgow (City of), United Kingdom
    Dispatches to: United Kingdom
    Excludes: Channel Islands
    Change country:

    Postcode:

This seller does not deliver to Ireland.

In that auction it seems it is specifically calling out the channel islands as being excluded from the UK, -i.e. Ireland is not specifically called out.

I would still chance it and ask if they would sell outside, however the fact they have selected an exclusion might mean they really only do want to deal within the UK.

I think many people put up auctions without much thought, like you say the majority will post outside if you ask them, it might never cross their mind that Irish people might want to buy from them, same goes for US sellers.

I checked another UK auction, a guy/tout selling tickets for slane with postage only shown for within the UK!

I disagree. The standard text excludes the Channel Isles but there is a separate added line excluding Ireland. Maybe the fact that we all ignore what the postage says & email is annoying some sellers.

IMO Ebay .ie was a bad idea as no one uses it. Sellers will not pay extra to be on a site covering a relatively small number of people. So do an ebay.ie search & say get 5 items. Do the same search on the uk site & get 100 items ?. Even the postage doesn't seem any cheaper.

It seems odd for ebay sellers to refuse to ship here given that Amazon have done the exact opposite by including Ireland in their UK free shipping.

Sellers can specifically exclude countries if they like, most often it's Italy and Nigeria because of the scams, but it can be any country and for any reason.

I don't believe it has anything to do with eBay, it's the seller that includes this working. Check out any other auction that only lists the UK for post, this for example, there's no specific exclusions mentioned. It's the seller that excludes countries, not eBay. There's nothing you can do about this, because you can't force a seller to ship internationally.

Have you contacted the seller to ask him if he will ship to Ireland and how much it costs ?

Also the seller has 4 negative feedback and 9 neutral feedback , and they all relate to size / quality .

He seems to be selling sizes which are different to normal UK sizes , and some buyers have remarked that the items are copies .

I cannot see this line anywhere, might be different settings or something.

Ebay is terrible, I cannot understand how such a big company has such a pathetic search engine, which few people seem to know how to use. If you do advanced searches you can find items on the .ie site by selecting worldwide and any country/region in the location. It is still bad since on the .ie site there is no option to sort items by price including shipping. This is the most obvious total that people are interested in! it took them years to do it on the .com and we still do not have it here.

Even then on the .com my PC and laptop both tend to pack in when you I try and pick Ireland as my country to show postage to.

Just doing a test there picking all countries/regions and worldwide I am actually finding 18 hits on .ie and only 14 on .com -crazy stuff, esp. as they are in effect doing themselves out of business.

I wonder if there is a decent third party search engine for ebay.
