    By jailbreaking you can also unlock the phone

    Not on iOS 4.1 thought as the 4.1 update also updates the baseband..

    the only way to unlock 4.1 was if ya used tinyumbrella to preserve the basedband

    True, just I was in an unlock shop on Thursday trying to get my iPhone unlocked (updated it :\) and the guy in the shop said 4.2 is being released next week so the unlock for 4.1 will be released then too. Just wondering if anybody else heard it.

    It's impossible to tell when it'll be realeased. They could decide to release it tomorro or next month. We just have to wait unfortunatly :(

    OMG, the guy in the shop updated your phone and the gave you a load of speil to cover himself

    unlocks happen when the dev team find an injection vector/buffer overflow exception to put their code into it. It does happen, but only every so often

    some sources say that the release will be on the 7th of November so I'm guessing the unlock will come out on the 8th or 9th.
    personally I'm keeping my fingers crossed.

    Nah, I restored it and it was fine, my sister was using her itunes to put music on it for me and she updated it to 4.1 on me and it undid the unlock. Ah well, I'll just have to wait until the unlock is released :) I've been waiting this long on an iphone a few more days/weeks won't kill me.

    Nope, looks like I just erased all settings and contents, not the same as restoring is it? I done it through the iPhone, not iTunes. My sister done the update via iTunes.

    ah sorry i thought ya restored, the 3g must not have to be activated after resttings all content and settings, when i did it on my old 3gs i had to connect to itunes and activate it

    No, definitely didn't have to connect to itunes after erasing all the settings and content on the 3g. Thanks for all the help, the guy in the unlock shop is fairly sure that the 4.2 is coming out middle of next week so here's hoping!

    MuscleNerd has stated several times via his Twitter account that there will be an unlock released a few days after 4.2 is released. He said that there will definitely be an unlock for iPhone 3G / 3GS and possibly for iPhone 4
