I thought this might be of interest, yeah it's a cartoon...but it might be good:

    http://tvbythenumbers.com/2010/11/05/tron-uprising-a-spin-off-of-the-tron-feature-films-to-premiere-in-summer-2012-on-disney-xd/70984

Disney XD has put “TRON: Uprising” on the grid —a compelling story and visually stunning television series scheduled to premiere in summer 2012 on Disney XD. The story focuses on an era of the “TRON” storyline that transpires after the popular 1982 feature film and before the story in Walt Disney Studios’ upcoming “TRON: Legacy.” Its impressive list of artists, animators, directors, producers and digital technicians includes executive producer/director Charlie Bean (“Robotboy,” “Samurai Jack,” and “Powerpuff Girls”); and consulting producers Edward Kitsis, Adam Horowitz (both screenwriters of “TRON: Legacy” / executive producers of “Lost”) and Justin Springer (co-producer of “TRON: Legacy”). The series will be preceded by a 10-part “TRON” micro-series launching in Fall 2011 on Disney XD.

The noteworthy voice cast of “TRON: Uprising” includes Elijah Wood as Beck, Emmanuelle Chriqui as Paige, Mandy Moore as Mara, Nate Corddry as Zed, Lance Henriksen as Tesler, Paul Reubens as Pavel, Reginald VelJohnson as Able and Bruce Boxleitner reprising his role as Tron.

In making the announcement, Gary Marsh, president, Entertainment, and Chief Creative Officer, Disney Channels Worldwide said: “‘Tron: Uprising’ is the culmination of an extraordinary collaboration between Disney Television Animation and our feature film studio. And it is a perfect reflection of everything we want Disney XD to stand for – innovative storytelling, aspirational, heroic characters, and world class design.”

Produced by Disney Television Animation, the series follows Beck, a young program who becomes the unlikely leader of a revolution inside the computer world of The Grid. His mission is to free his home and friends from the reign of the villainous Clu and his henchman General Tesler. Beck will be trained by Tron—the greatest warrior the Grid has ever known. Tron will not only teach Beck the fighting skills he needs to challenge this brutal military occupation, but will be a guide and mentor to him as he grows beyond his youthful, impulsive nature into a courageous, powerful leader. Destined to become the new protector of the system, Beck adopts Tron’s persona and becomes the archenemy of Tesler and his oppressive forces.

What was that TV show years ago where this kid had a Pakistani friend who wore a turban and he would often enter a virtual reality world? He was also chased by a wheelchair bound villain. It sorta reminds me of that!

Just watched the first episode. Absolutely stunning. The artwork is second to none, the action was fantastic and the writing and tone were refreshingly adult. The soundtrack deserves a mention too - very menacing.

Well done Disney..... it's a cracker.

Have to mirror your thoughts here, a visually stunning piece of tv, nevermind it's a cartoon. great voice casting + kick ass soundtrack and very decent story make for a very adult orientated cartoon.

ps. the two head writers/producers on Once Upon A Time wrote the pilot + consulting producers :)

just watched it and what fantastic stuff!
it's got a brilliant story and doesn't feel like a kids cartoon at all
was that Daniels from The Wire?

Excellent second episode. The visuals in this are truly stunning giving rise to cinematic action sequences.
It's good to see that it's faithful to the films and that it doesn't dumb it down. People are being killed - oh sure, it's "de-rezzed" but it's death all the same.
Looking forward to seeing where this goes.

Really enjoyed this, will keep watching, the animation is really slick and the soundtrack is cool, nicely ties in to the movies as well

Really liking this. Wasn't overly gone on the character design initially but it's growing on me. Love the overall design in keeping with Legacy. The writing is interesting and the voice cast top notch. The tone is quite grown up. I certainly wasn't expecting people to die in a mainstream Disney TV cartoon that's for sure. And to see those innocent characters killed because of Beck's actions was very dark. Brave. Hopefully it'll do well (I'm sure Richard will keep us up to date on that front.). It will be interesting to what elements of the Legacy story they incorporate. I also really like the music. It was very well designed to fit in with Daft Punk's Legacy score. So much so that I had to pause to see if they did do the music (They didn't)

Definitely one to keep an eye on. But, by GOD to Disney slap their logos and popups all over a broadcast. Even worse than Nickelodeon. Watching their Avengers show was painful. There were many scenes with subtitles or text on the screen that was almost totally obscured by their popups.

The composer for this worked with Daft Punk on "Tron: Legacy", so that's why the music is so fitting!

that drives me nuts about american tv stations, the Disney logo is HUGE and it keeps advertising other shows and telling you what you're currently watching, surely every tv box has an info button that tells you whats on by now? its distracting as hell.

it sounds fantastic as well, the music is spot on and in keeping with Daft Punks score, and the sounds of the lightcycles and explosions are great, the rip I saw was in 5.1 so sounded lovely on my headphones.

wonder how long its going to run for

It's amazing just how fitting Lance Reddick (Agent Broyles from Fringe/Daniels from the Wire) is for an animated feature. It was almost perfect. Would be interesting how they do the next episode, as I hope he's not killed off so soon.

I remember previously reading that Tron: Legacy was part of a trilogy (well, that's what Empire movie magazine said at the time) - does this animated feature count as part of it, I wonder, or are we to expect a further two movies?

He's got a good rich voice that worked great for this and gave the character that bit of gravitas.

I've combined watching this with "Avatar: The Legend of Korra". We're being spoilt with high quality animations that, while on what could be seen as "kids" channels, are rewarding for people of all ages.

It seems like they're moving back to the way cartoons were done during the late 80s and 90s, where they weren't treating children like complete and utter idiots. Sometimes I go back and watch the likes of the Gargoyles, Sonic the Hedgehog (the one with this intro) and others, and it strikes me just how many of those dealt with some pretty adult themes. Then, with the likes of Fairy Godparents, cartoons started to get really dumbed down. Yes, they may have been funny, but there was no substance there. Now they're not afraid to deal with those things finally. This and Legend of Korra might just see more of their ilk being made, especially with the growing popularity of both, and this is an excellent thing.

agreed, stuff like The Tick, Earthworm Jim and the Warner stuff like Animaniacs and Freakazoid were really subversive and adult for supposed kids cartoons, I still watch animaniacs occasionally have the first season of it on dvd.

    That two parter was excellent.

I love each of the characters, they're well created. Dyson, especially, is quite flawless.

Going to watch it now, but has is anyone else annoyed with how the promos for the coming episodes are done on Nickelodeon? They paint them as cool and strangely happy, when in fact this show tends to be quite dark and deals with a lot of issues, like execution.

Just finished watching and yep, what an episode. Pretty much everything about this show is flawless; the music, the animation, the voice acting and fight sequences are executed flawlessly. It's gone up with Legend of Korra as my favourite animation series in a long time.

Got around to completing "Scars". Great episode. I'm wondering if it's a little too dark though for the station, especially with the other series that seem to follow it.
Take this two parter: It featured genocide, murder for revenge, and torture. Slimebusters (or whatever was after it) probably wasn't the same.

Is it doing poorly in the ratings? Seems to have vanished from the schedules again. Could it find itself a better home on a different network?

What's impressive is the sheer quality here: story, characters with proper fleshed out motivations, outstanding visuals, and a brilliant score. Very under rated.

It's still being shown, but there seems to have been a mix-up with different places, like IMDB. Ep.11 was "We Both Know How This Ends", with Ep.12 being "Grounded", which sounds pretty interesting. Not much happens in #11, especially after the excellence of Scars, but it did have some character development from the minor characters at the Garage.

Hmmm... my usual sites made no mention of Ep 11. Was it aired recently?

Not sure if it should be mentioned, so apologies if Mods think it's in breach of the charter, but I find Sidereel to be excellent for keeping updated on when shows air. According to their Tron: Uprising page, the next episode is on the 30th of this month. Whether it'll be "Grounded" or "The Stranger", I don't know.

I wonder if the channel its aired on has anything to do with it not being listed on many websites. Does Korra get a mention too? It's on a similarly child-friendly channel.

Aye, watched that one recently. This show is excellent but it's far too dark for the channel it's on. Look at the icons for the shows following it - all bright and colourful. This show is bleak by the standards of most adult shows.

I must have missed a lot of episodes, 'cause I had no idea who the Stranger was. He did seem to be a bit too Joker-esque, but still a good villain. Sad to see Able gone.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,270 ✭✭✭TheIrishGrover

Yeah, it's a great show alright. A good idea in Disney's end. They need some shows for an older demographic. Don't think it did too well viewership-wise at the end though so not sure if it'll get another season. Fingers crossed

What an amazing series. I will be heart broken if it doesn't get another series, but would watch this series a few times over..easily.
