    Is anyone insured by Setanta?

I just got my renewal notice and I am with axa through the broker and to stay with Axa i will have to pay 905 euro but if I go to Setanta I only have to pay 595 euro.

I really dont understand how one company can charge so less without thinking there is something dodgy about it.

Had a look on their website and windscreen cover is automatically on the policy but there is a limit of 200 applies unless the worst repair company Allied Irish Windscreens are used.

I have insurance on my Integra thru Setanta. They came in less than half the price of the next best quote for almost exactly the same policy. I did some research on them but could find nothing dodgy about them.

My broker told me the reason they are cheaper is because they are based in Malta or something...

I'd switch no bother, new business for them means a good price for you.

I had a jeep insured with Setanta, again they were much cheaper with their quote which is why I changed. However when I made a claim it took them 9 months to pay up, and at that stage I had threatened legal action against them. I'd suggest you steer well clear of them, better to pay the extra few quid and stick with a reputable company (if there is such a thing in the insurance business).

I hope I'm not being a killjoy here but there are a few other things to consider:-

1/. Claims. Do they pay in full and on time? Are the decent or difficult?

2/. Service. Temp. transfers, or adding a named driver. Do they fleece you?

3/. Financial strength. Will they take your money and go bust next month? It's happened before.

When were you insured with them? I have seen a post on another forum from 2008 that some people had difficulty in getting claims from them. However as its going through my broker, I would be dealing with them, no?

Of course there are other good posts about them.

One instant concern for me is why the feck is an Irish insurer registered in Malta?

I would be worried that you are outside the MIBI arrangements, IIF code of conduct, etc.

its funny how policys can differ even from brokers.

insure.ie gave me my renewal quote this year of €580 with aviva, it would have cost €690 to stay with RSA. a local broker in Fermoy could do €460 for me with aviva and when I went back to insure.ie they got it down to €440 with aviva LOL

also got a quote through another broker that has a dedicated line for great rates through my credit union - €680 with??? - aviva

    Ridiculous

Theyre not an Irish insurer; theyre Maltese aparrently. They are registered in Ireland but they are not based here. Tbh I didnt fully get what the broker was on about; I was just so happy I was getting insurance for less than a grand, they could have told me they are run by Ronald McDonald for all I cared!

Setanta was set up a few years ago by a bunch of Irish brokers. They originally concentrated on commercial motor fleet insurance, but I guess they've started underwriting private car business now. They have an office in Blanchardstown.

Being registered in Malta is no big deal. Malta has a lower rate of profit tax than Ireland, is in the EU so a Maltese insurer is entitled to sell business anywhere they want to in the EU, and importantly, their financial regulator is pro-business, which means it took the Setanta guys a lot less time and a lot less red tape to get their company set up than they would if they'd tried to set up an Irish insurance company. Malta is trying to establish their own eqivalent of the IFSC, but concentrating on insurance rather than funds.
So that probably goes some way towards explaining why an essentially Irish insurance company is registered in Malta.

The only way to know if you are getting a good price is to compare each policy. The cheapest quote is not always the best cover.

Cheap insurance quotes are great until you find out later when you need to use them that x, w and z is not covered under the policy and any savings made a the time of taking out the policy are blown away. The premium figures can be fudged to look better value but on closer inspection you find that the policy excess can be higher, added benefits like windscreen cover, breakdown assist, NCB protection or temperary car hire are all excluded.

Got an AXA renewal quote and it was way up, had no claims or accidents, did anyone else get a way higher quote for renewing with AXA?
If they hike their premiums, customers will just desert them in droves, maybe they're trying to scare the punters off before pulling out?

Fuzz, the quote from Axa is only about 100 euro or so more than last year.

Only a hundred more, but with the quote from no nonsense there suddenly was a 200 euro difference.
That's the problem with a lot of people, ah sure it's only a few quid more, and a bit more here and a bit more there, a sure a few quid won't hurt and i'll pay a bit more for this and a bit more for that, hey why am i broke and on the street?
Mind the pennies unless you have enough money and since losing my last job and finding another things are tight and every cent counts.
