permanent retainers

    Can anyone give me some info on premanent retainers (thin strip of metal at the back of teeth after braces taken out)? I have been told I may have to get these after my braces are taken out? What are the pros and cons?
    All info appreciated.

    Hi Galwaygirl

    the fixed or permanent retainers work well as long as you look after them. the benefit is that you dont have to worry about putting them in at night but they can and do break. for some problems they are essential, eg very crooked or twisted teeth will almost certainly relapse without one.

    You need excellent oral hygiene or risk decay and gum disease in the area. finally you should have them checked every year or so to make sure there are no problems. Removable retainers also work well, you need to discuss with the orthodontist what is best for you.

    As a patient I have one and have had it since 1995. I really dont notice it anymore and its grand to clean around. It did break once....and even though I am a dentist I waited too long before getting it seen to and my teeth relapsed a bit. There the ideal solution really if they are possible

    Didn't think was worth starting a new thread for. I have recently got my braces off and I have been given the double retainer type thing. How long do I need to keep this on for? It doesn't bother me or anything I'm just wondering how much longer I need to wear this.

    I have been wearing it a lot becuase I know of someone who didn't wear theirs and their teeth started moving back again, which I don't want to happen :o.
