    Hi,
I have a friend in LIT who's wondering; is the grading system in LIT similar to UL where only the final marks of 2nd, 3rd, and 4th year are taken into account in the overall degree grade?

No, it's based on the average of your results for each module in fourth year (for an honours degree), weighted by ECTS credits. If you have 10 credits per module then each module will be contribute equally. Some can be more, some less.

    Average of 70% and above - 1.1
    60-69% - 2.1
    50-59% -2.2
49% and below - Pass Degree

For more information, refer to section 4.3.3 of "ACADEMIC COUNCIL REGULATIONS AND PROCEDURES for TAUGHT PROGRAMMES Academic Year 2009/2010".
This can be found on eLIT.

Edit - if you fail an exam you cannot receive a Bachelors degree. If you re-sit the exam in August the maximum you can be awarded is a Pass Degree, even if your average is above 70%. That's the sucky bit.
