Swimming Training sessions for Triathlons

    Hi,

I'm relatively new to triathlons, I did a few sprints but would like to do more next summer. I was wondering if you could recommend any good training sessions or drills for the pool that would improve my time. It takes me around 20 mins to do 750m. I can do longer distances (up to 1500m) but I find it very boring in the pool and I dont feel that I'm getting any faster. I usually do about 750m straight. I'm planning on taking lessons in the new year but was wondering if you could recommend any interesting pool work outs that would help improve my time?

    Thanks a mill.
    G

    Hi G,
The sessions that were created by interested here would be a very good starting point. It's also worth checking any posts that he has contributed to as there are always very good pointers on swim training and technique.

Not sure where in Galway you are based but a masters club or one of the tri clubs might be a good option to help with your swimming.

second the masters sessions - tri clubs usually do ones with lanes divided into ability.

I find it very hard to motivate myself if there wasn't something structured laid out for me. A coach will normally (or should anyway) give you pointers on techique from the deck

Take the lessons now if you can...even one lesson. Waiting till the new year is 2 more months of reinforcing incorrect swimming style. I made the mistake earlier in the summer of deciding to "build up a bit of fitness first" before getting a lesson so as to get the most value out of it....wrong. Swimming is all about technique, not fitness. A good instructor only needs to see you swim one length to see what you are doing wrong.

Thanks for that info guys. Will look into lessons. I did a bit of sea swimming over the summer and I really enjoyed that. Much more interesting than pool swimming. I'll have a look at those drills and give them a go.

Getting a private lesson is good.

Swimming 750m in one go might be bad for technique as your stroke will suffer as you tire which will only enforce bad habits.

I used swimplan.com for a while to generate my session plans.

However these days I just do 10X25m take a break and repeat .......

Best way to train is with a group, no doubt about it.
