    Hi guys,

Does anyone know what would be the quickest route from Oranmore to Grancecon, Co. Wicklow? Would it be the M6 and the down from Tullamore and through Portarlington, Monsaterevin and then onto M7 for a bit or would it be though Portuman, Birr and onto M7 there and all the way up along M7?

    Cheers

Friends of mine regularly go from Galway to visit family in Wexford and use the M6, M50 and N11 as its roughly the same time wise as going cross country but far more comfortable and relaxing to drive on motorways.

I'd do the same to be honest. M6, get off at the Naas exit, head to Naas onto the M7/9 there and off you go. Grangecon is just off the M9. It would be a far more comfortable drive but you will probably be hit with a few tolls.

    Cheers Fozzie Bear,

What junction no. is the Naas exit on the M6?

Junction 6, signposted for Maynooth and Naas IIRC.

sorry junction 6 is showing as clara/moate on my M6 map?

The M6 turns into the M4 as you approach Dublin. I would say head all the way into the M50 and take the Naas exit on that (signposted N7/M7 for Cork Waterford and Limerick). Look the route up on a map.

    Cheers Guys,

You reckon so that it would be quicker than getting off the M6 at Tullamore exit?

No - what I think he meant was Junction 6 on the M4.

However, you would be better off taking Junction 7 on the M4 which is at Maynooth, and its a decent straight run through Straffan to the N7 at Kill. (very near Naas). Its about 15 mins from Maynooth to Kill.

Once on the N7 head south for the M9 junction and off you go.

Yes, J6 on the M4. I find the back roads between Maynooth, Dunboyne, Naas, etc (the whole general area) to be extremely dire. If the opening poster is unfamiliar with the area then he should stick to the motorways in my opinion and go by the M6/M4, M50, N7/M7, M9.

I'd normally agree with you Furet but in this case, while conceeding the some of the backroads in that area aren't great, I'd still advise the OP to come off at Maynooth (Junction 7) and then head down the R406 (not a bad road) and then straight across onto the L2007 (through Straffan) and onto the N7 at Kill.

A lot depends on the time he/she might be reaching this point but if its anytime during rush hour then going to the M50 brings potential delays at Newlands Cross and the busy part of the N7. Even with slower speeds on the backroads I think there is a time saving to made here.

That's the Ryder Cup road, pretty decent all things considered. Much better than Kilcock to Naas, which would be the parallel-ish alternative. Definitely think there is nothing to be gained by going the M50. Maynooth to Kill is difficult to get lost on.

If I was coming off the M6 Eastbound I'd take J7 Kilcock/Clane for Naas. The road between it and Clane is nearly 100% realigned in recent years. Only problem is possibly hitting Sallins traffic.

Clane 10 times worse. Very poor traffic layout and crap bypass - but DO use it especially at rush hour.

I assume you mean the M4 instead of the M6.

The other problem with this route is you still have to go through Clane which can be problematic and then can't get off the Sallins road without having to either going right into the centre of Naas (don't ever ever do it) or going around all the roundabouts to get back to the M7 at Junction 10.

Still think going the Straffan road (L2007) after the R406, to get to N7 at Kill is a better option if you leave the M4 at Junction 7.

Turn left at Monread/Millennium Park RAB, two further roundabouts and you're at M7 J9...

    Cheers guys,

Really appreciate all this advice. I have gone the Tullamore route through Portarlington, Monastervin and its a twisty narrow boring pain in the butt of a route.

I reckon you're still quicker going Tullamore, Port, Monastervin, Kilberry, Athy, New Athy Link Road (Yipee).
Cross over the new M9 down onto the old N9 just before Crookstown.
First right after Crookstown garage is for Gangecon & Dunlavin.
