Wanted: League Leader

I've been running the Pokémon League and having a great time running in. My husband has been offered a good job in London, so we are taking it and moving over. The exact date has yet to been set, but we are looking at the near future, something like the end of November.

So to be blunt, I'm looking for someone to take over the running of the Pokémon League when I leave. It's not difficult to do, just show up and be nice to all players, take the money every week, give it to the shop and get boosters.

League days should be able to change if Thursdays don't suit the new Leader, this should be organised between the Leader and the shop (I'll give you the phone number to call and all that).

If push comes to shove, I could get someone in to run it, but they wouldn't have the same love and drive for it as I know another Pokémon player would have.

And by the way the League Leader can also earn points towards Promo Cards and other goodies :)

    Any takers?

Rather than one person taking over, we should have a fail safe system or back up leader if you get me?
Just that way then it dosen't come down to just the one leader, so one leader can't make it the second in command takes over etc. It might the pressure on you too Buzz while your in the middle of your move.
    Just a thought :)

p.s. NOBODY IS TO NOMINATE ME! I'm back in treatment agian :( Don't push people forward let them choose to do it if they want. I MAYBE be able to help on occasions...

Given my tendency to have other stuff happen on the Thursdays, I can't.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 866 ✭✭✭Buzzthebatgirl

I was chatting with the Shop Dude and he suggests the League could also be held on either Tuesdays, Thursdays or Fridays, if that makes any difference to anyone.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 360 ✭✭popzmaster

I got a text yesterday saying that I could perhaps be working every Thursday, Friday and Saturday from now till Christmas. I might be able to do it if we changed to Tuesdays, which I know suits some people who have college late on Thursdays and all, plus like no one else seems to be overly enthusiastic, but another problem for me is that I don't have internet access at home, but if push comes to shove(and we can't just let the league die after Buzz's tireless efforts to get it up and running) I could perhaps maybe possibly do it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 866 ✭✭✭Buzzthebatgirl

I got some news that my move has been delayed until at least Dec 1st, so a new Leader isn't as urgent now. I know I can get Chris the Shop Guy to keep an eye on things, but he is also working in the shop so can't give his full attention to everything.

Congrats on getting the extra work Popzmaster, you've been working hard to get it :)

If it's not too much hassle and suits mire people Tuesday is fine with me. I have no problem posting reminders etc. I just know for a fact I won't be able to make every week.

@ Popzmaster, if it suits you I can lend a helping hand running things cyberly, not so much physically tho due to my own commitments.

So has there been any more word on this? What happens if no one steps forward before Thursday?

I think the idea of a backup leader is a really good one. The main thing stopping me from saying I'll do it is that I couldn't guarantee I'd be able to make it every single week. Most weeks, yeah, but life has a habit of getting in the way, especially coming up to Christmas. If I knew I was going to miss a night and could pass all the kit on to another leader or a trusted player beforehand, it wouldn't be a problem.

I don't want the league to die!

Quite simply the League dies until someone starts it up again :(

Edit: Perhaps the easiest thing to do would be to cancel this one as that thing called Christmas in the way of many a good evening out, and start up a new one in the New Year? I have no idea how Pokemon.com would respond to that, but I'm sure they'd go mental if there were more than one registered Leaders.

Those of you that have POP IDs: Can anyone access this section? This is where you can apply to run a League:

Yep I can apply for a new league. I was thinking probably the best thing to do would be leave all the stuff in a safe place in the shop and whoever shows up first runs the league that night. If that makes sense. Of course it would have to be someone who's been to the league once or twice before.

Hi, what happened here in the end? I won't be moving to Dublin for a long time, but i would so attend this, so i was wondering is anybody going to take over?

If anyone is willing and able to take over then yes it's still do-able :)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 241 ✭✭SamIAmNot

At the moment its all on Hiatus (meetings and league night)... But I'm hoping that by next week at the earliest people will be back into their normal schedule after the Christmas Holidays, so check back for updates!

Well, if i was able to i definately would. But i'm not going to be able to even attend until i move down for college.

How many people attended every week?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 15,183 ✭✭✭✭Atavan-Halen

It varied from 3 at the least to about 8 or 10 at the max. Just depended on who was free to come and whatnot.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 241 ✭✭SamIAmNot

On a good league night there is a minimum of 3-4 but I think the most we had at once was like 6 or so. Its just hard to find a day that suits most, plus people have there own commitments.

Dunno how much you know so a quick break down is:

There is a €5 cover cost to the shop we played in, but you got a pack of cards after the money is handed over to the guys in the shop. Plus if you won or lost a match (cards or DS) you get a stamp, once you get enough stamps you get a prize.

    Game = Prize
    Cards = Card based prizes
    DS = DS skins, Stickers

When do you intend to move up?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 7,132 ✭✭✭Just Like Heaven

Oh well i'm in leaving cert now, so not until i start college. In september.

But i was just curious if there was a league at all really.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 360 ✭✭popzmaster

Okay the Christmas is over and im back on the dole so I should be able to maybe box this off now...would it be possible to stick up a new poll for which day after the shop telsl us which days are good for them now? And if someone possibly has a number I could ring that would also be good. I'm into putting effort in but not as much so's that i gotta go lookm for phone numbers :p

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 360 ✭✭popzmaster

Yep, I have to be the biggest failer off all time and I offer the most profuse apologies I can muster, but with work and the fact that I'm the most unreliable person in this country I dont think I should be the league leader. As much as I'd hate to see it die, I just have to much **** happenin right now so if anyone else wants to throw there hat in the ring, dont do it cos its a recession and you might not be able to afford a new hat. But seriously someone else do it

Best of luck to whomever steps up to the plate to lead this thing. I wouldn't mind doing it myself, only I dont have a giant amount of experience in running this, but I could try. Hell, whomever does actually step up to run this thing can rely on my for abit of help with parts if they need to.

What all does running this actually entail? I'm not exactly doing anything these days so I wouldn't mind trying to help out running it with someone else, or if someone wanted to show me what it was I've to do.

Someone got a hankering for the tcg after the last meetup :P

I have no problem running it if you can wait until the end of June. I still have most of the stuff from the last league and have a good idea how it's run.

I totally didn't buy booster packs for the first time in a 6 years yesterday... You guys are enablers. And anyway, full time employment => far more disposable income than I'm used to => ridiculously ill advised purchases.

But yeah, I'd be allowed use my Shiny 1st Edition Rocket Machop, yeah? :P

Avatan should still have the contact details for Gamer's World. If you need help in the reporting or other random running and advice on the league, DON'T contact Pokémon.com (you are wasting your time), politely ask Ben Ward. He runs the League nearest to me over here and damn well knows his stuff, backwards. If he doesn't know, he'll know where to send you to find the help you need.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 429 ✭✭Linoud

Also, yeah, I have absolutely 0 clue about the TCG so if I was to help out running the meetups, I would only be able to help with the videogames department, that's all I tend to play. :P

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 360 ✭✭popzmaster

The cloud of lethargy, you will all be ecstatic to know, which so afflicted me has flown over the town of Bray, Co.Wicklow. I have contacted Gamers World and they say we can play any day from 10am to 6pm or Tuesday, Thursday and Friday nights 6-11. I have also contacted Ian Fotherington(ham, can't remember the poor guys name now :P) and am awaiting a reply. We should be back in business forthwith if not sooner. Sorry for taking so long guys.
As a sidenote what did ya think of my sparkling oratory? :)

Just signed up to show my interest for the league. I don't know about the rest of you but afternoons on weekends is ideal for me. 12-3 Saturday? Also will there be much TCG interest as that would be my reason for going.

There'll be some, at least. I recently fell back into the dark addiction of the TCG, so that's one.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,066 ✭✭✭elekid

I'd play the TCG or the DS games. Tuesday, Thursdays or Saturdays would suit me. Good work!

I'm available anytime after 21st June :D Except one week in July when I'm on holidays.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 429 ✭✭Linoud

I only play the DS games myself, not really too picky about the day myself. Preferably not Saturday, since I've got other game things usually on then. :P Like the fighting game community! Woo!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 360 ✭✭popzmaster

and whats the game of choice for the fighting game community nowadays?

Edit: No word back yet from Ian but he'll surely be on to me soon

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 429 ✭✭Linoud

There is quite a few games of choice these days. There is Street Fighter, which'll be doing exceptionally well again with the release of Arcade Edition, BlazBlue Continuum Shift II, Marvel VS Capcom 3, Mortal Kombat 9. Infact, they're having their Evo Qualifiers this coming weekend, just stroll over to their forums if your interested. :] I'm a Blazblue player myself. :D

They run things pretty well for their tournaments, wonder if we could run similar things for the DS side of things for pokemon, with different tournament themes or such, or an overall league for a month or two or something. Themes being simple stuff like: Kanto Only, Johto Only, Hoenn Only, etc

Can work for alot of things, like Stage 1 Evolutions only, etc.

You mean like exactly what I said here? :P

I guess? :P I originally thought of the idea while at the VGC in Birmingham, but it's far from original at all. Good to see some other people with the same ideas though. Now as for the actual execution and smooth running of those ideas, that would be the ideal outcome of all this brainstorming. :P

Yeah. We just need le venue, and that looks like it's being sorted. We'd hardly NEED prizes (for me the reward has always been playing against a human who knows what they're doing), but if we could snag free shizz it'd be awesome. And then a regular time, which we should probably do via a Doodle or summat.

Quick intro: Irish player staying in the UK, otherwise I'd definitely be along to the league!

@popz, Ian is notoriously hard to get a hold of for some reason. Best bet might be to call him if you can obtain a number or simply update the existing league/apply for a new one (not exactly sure which is easier but he tends to approve leagues quickly).

Best of luck in your league endeavour. It seems as though there isn't a huge community but if you get the same luck I'm having in Scotland you can attract a lot of people to the game. It would definitely be really cool for Ireland to have a tournament or two, just like the UK (and give me an excuse to come over and see my family more :D). After all, there's over a million in Dublin right? Hopefully there are people out there!

I don't know how people approach the game over there, and I know some go for a more competitive route, whereas others just want to sit down and enjoy the game (it can sometimes be hard to mix these, especially considering the base set cards are wickedly powerful compared to the modern ones [energy removal - ARGH!]), but there are plenty of cheap, fun and decent deck ideas floating around at the moment on a variety of websites.

Hope all of the above helps, would love for your league to remain successful and continue to grow.

Not sure on your linking policy on the forums, but google "pokebeach", "pokegym" or "six prizes" for interesting pokemon TCG news/stuff/articles.

Just realised I can actually do that, and now the site lets me update previous events. So now the first league actually happened, but only with the 4 player's POP numbers I happened to find.

Don't know if it helps, but myself and the league leader near me realised you have to update previous league attendances before you can order new promos.

Hope you find your new leader, I'd love to visit next time I get the chance to come over.

Hello everyone, some fantastic and not so fantastic news. Firstly fairplay to whoever travelled to VGC's. NOw down to business. I finally got an email back from Ian at Poke UK last week (but I could only get on boards today so apologies) that said sorry he missed my email so long, and he's finally transferred the league over to me.I figured somene might have had a word in his ear in Birmingham. Bad news is I work for 2 staffing agencies now and could get a phonecall to work at any time so I wouldn't be able to commit to a certain day every week. Which means someone else has to be leader. As i have no internet at home I probably wont even find out for a while who it is but good luck in your endeavors yo! Maybe with this new league we can beat our record attendance which i think was 9 on the first day?? I dunno anyway sorry I can't do it but as i say I can't commit like but I'm sure somebody can the league was good craic and is an asset to the gamer in Ireland ya know. I'll stop rambling now

He knows my face (I've been at one of his TCG events, and boy was he shocked to see me!), so he properly decided to help out the Irish comm or face the wrath of the red head :P

I'd love to host but working full time allows me 2 days off a week and they change from week to week so I couldn't set a certain day of the week that it could be done.

Oddly I met Ian Fortheringham at a tournament last Saturday and he is trying to get me to run a League near my place. One of the things he suggest was running bi-weekly or monthly Leagues. He said monthly Leagues are hard to run, but they are possible.

A mad suggestion if someone was to run a League but not commit to a set day, how about setting up a website/Facebook page for the League. Once players come, grab their email/phone numbers and then send batch emails/texts on a weekly basis reminding them when the the League is on?

Oh and when the League is set up or on the way to being set up, please contact me, I have some extra League badges that should go to a good cause :)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 360 ✭✭popzmaster

A bi-weekly league could be good alright but I'd still suggest someone who actually owns a computer do it instead of me :P could be hard to do the online part of it when the only time you can use the laptop is when your girlfriend is MAKING YOU A SANDWICH!!!

    Hello All,

Hope you are all well etc etc.
Anyways I'm getting emails from poké.uk about ordering packs for league seasons, so next time a new league season is starting and available for ordering I'm gonna order and see how we get on. Thing is tho as i said im a casual worker and could be called to work at any time so a stand in leader would certainly be helpful, as if I can't make it I don't really have any way of letting anybody know. Anyways we can mull this over as we wait for Jet season to end and whatever the hell they'll call the next season to start so yeah, SLÁN!!!!!!!
