ive got a 1.6 petrol passat and it recently went threw the nct
    passed on everything exept emissions
roughly they were in the 5.3 area when there ment to be in the 0.6 area
i chaged the cat i stuck a spurious one in no difference
i stuck a genuine one in and no difference
theres a terrible smell of unburnt fuel (sometimes) from the back of the car,,,,all the coil packs and plugs are working fine,i done a compression test on the cylenders and nothing outta the ordinarey appeard, and i done a sniff test on the coolent bottle to no problims there so the gasket is still doin its job
the car is serviced regularly and well maintained
the car has 270k on it (doesin help matters)

    any ideas
    thanks

Why throw money at cats without a diagnosis? Take it to someone who actually knows what they are doing

Very good..... I knew the wording was a bit dodgy when I posted it.

Could be a problem with the ECU so a diagnostics could show up the problem.
Possibly a lambda sensor. There might be a pre and post Lambda sensor on your car.

If unburnt fuel is getting past the engine it will be burned in the CAT and it will damage if not wreck it altogether. My coil pack failed and sent unburned fuel into the CAT and had it glowing but it still works fortunately.

Hope you can get it sorted.
