Small diesel for very little

    So here is a challenge.

I need a small economical car/van for a 60-80 mile commute each day. The defender is not cheap to run on that mileage every day.

So its gotta be diesel for obvious economical and financial reasons, cheap to insure for a young male and most importantly cheap as is possible. Anything below 1500 quid will be considered, but the cheaper the better.

I don't know where to start on that price level.

An before anyone suggests them, the yaris and the micra are out of the question.

    I passed a transporter carrying 7 or 8 Ex An-Post vans today.
    Looked like Citroen Berlingo's.
Heading for the auctions in all likelyhood.

With your budget and consideration for your circumstances in mind I'd suggest a Corolla van of the 1992 - 97 vintage. Not sure what the current status of motor tax on these vehicles are for non commercial users. If you need to pay the going rate for a 2.0 litre passenger car it'll be saucy enough but if not your laughing. I know a friend or two who just taxed their vans commercially for private use lately without any hassle. However, Im sure its something thats going to be tightened up on in the fututre. Driving 60-80 miles in a Micra or Yaris on a daily basis is just going to be crude, they're not designed for that so am with you on that one. Plus if your doing 75 mph on a motorway with a Micra you certainly ain't sparing petrol and probably not very safe either.

You should probably be able to get insurance cheaper on Corolla van but it depends on insurance company as some won't even quote you on one either, but those who do should be cheaper. Had a quick browse through donedeal and picked out a few that may interest you

Wouldn't fancy that one due to rust but something L series powered would be ideal for you. Even the non intercooled ones do great mpg. I got 53mpg from a 1997 Rover 400 that I had the bosot and fueling turned up on, 4 adults return trip from Cork to Thurles. The intercooled versions will average 45+ no probs, closer to 50 in fact.

We'd all love to be cruising the motorways in Lexus Ls400s/530ds etc but meanwhile back in the real world I totally disagree with all the above ...

EDIT would concede that i ran a Toyota Aygo which wouldnt return over 55mpg despite promising much more in official figures -then again 80mph prob uses a lot more than 70mph in that sort of car ...but anything else was fine ...

Wouldn't look the part for a day out to a fancy hotel or anything but might set you thinking ..

Fairly sure the red one would be non intercooled, if she is anyway ready for a test it could be a good buy for what you want, the yellow reg one would be too much hassle in my view.

    This one wins for me

Less than a grand, great car, loads of comfort, she'll do 50mpg on a run and at 130,000 miles is quite fresh. Mayo bit of a trip though and it's defo an L series, not the BMW engine. Bit of putty for the passenger front window trim and she'll be lovely after a wash. I had a petrol 600 for 6 months, great buses, quite fancy a diesel one if a tidy one turned up, although doing only 200 miles a week I'll be slow to leave the ZT for a while.

Quick calculation here.120 miles out of €10 diesel (8litres) is 68mpg
    It's not the BMW engine.

Based on I wouldn't trust him...

I cant afford the tax on a larger engine, especially on a private car. There is a good chance I will be able to on at commercial van @ 288.

So that rules out the really comfortable looking rovers. Wouldn't mind the 600, looks the part.

Small van like a partner/berlingo or a kangoo at this stage it looks like

True, however some folks in the trade reckon petrol ZTs are Honda engines, others maintain they are Jaguar / Ford engines. He may well actually think it is a BMW engine out of sheer ignorance. If the car is straight and sound on inspection I wouldn't give a sh1t who he reckons made the engine or what mpg it does. It would do about 90 miles to a tenner of diesel, may well do 55mpg on a run as the intercooled ones are quite efficient, I knocked 53mpg from a non intercooled 400 with 4 adults in it on a return trip to Thurles from Cork, going off the gauge his guestimate is well out but how many threads do we have on here with folks coming up with equally f***tarded ways of measuring consumption. The chap sells tyres for a living in the back arse of nowhere, metrology may well not be one of his finer points :pac:

If you can get your hands on a clean one, I'd got for a Vauxhall Corsa with the 1.5TD Isuzu engine. I had two of them several years ago and they were brilliant. They sold them up to 2000 up north in three door SX trim and 5 door GLS. They are getting on a bit now, but again if you can get the right one, it will be a cracker. Low '50s mpg around town, rising to 70 on a spin. Plenty of poke and very reliable too. And no horrid electronics, DMF's, DPF'S or fly-by-wire nonsense under the bonnet.

I would recommend a Peugeot 307 1.4 Diesel, very economical up to 600 miles on a tank of Diesel, might be able to pick a 01 or 02 for reasonable money.

The ONLY carvan to consider here is the Ford Focus 1.6 TDCI. I have driven 3 of them from new and I cannot fault it in any way. You will get over 800 km's on a tank of diesel and superb reliability.

I'll agree to differ with you so ytarech. To be fair about it I never suggested a Lexus LS400 or BMW 530d...your just taking my remark completely out of context there. Something a notch or two up from a 1.0 litre Micra or Yaris such as a 1.4 litre Almera or Corolla would be a much more worthy companion for that sort of daily commute. I do conceed that for first time drivers, particularly for young males insurance is a b!tch and choice can be limited to smaller cars but if at all possible I'd certainly push for a more sizeable car than afore mentioned Yaris or Micra for that sort of daily commute.

    Lets summarise the requirements folks

    - must be less than €1500 to buy
    - must be less than €300/€350 to tax

    ;)

^^I'd actually recommend steering clear of that Renault Megavan. I had the unfortunate experience of owning one of these and must say it was the biggest ball of junk. Granted relatively comfy on a smooth road when it went well, but that seldom happened
