I got a spare PC off my sister today because my old PC died. It connected to the internet and i was able to go online etc. The PC was full of games, software etc, so i decided to format and reinstall windows (which ive done countless times over the years).

When finished installing, i went to go online and it wouldnt make a connection.

I'm using broadband via an ethernet connection, and the connection is working on my laptop no problem.

Can any bright minded person please tell me what could be wrong and how can i go about fixing this situation, as im all out of ideas. I'm using Windows XP SP3.

    Thanks.

This has nothing to do with your broadband, so I'm moving this to the Windows forum. More than likely it's a driver or network setup issue.

at a guess you need network card drivers

    what make / model ?

are there any yellow devices in device manager in control panel ?

Did you get a CD/DVD instal disk with the computer ?
If not maybe use someone elses computer to download drivers for your own. Sounds like your ethernet is not up to date or working right.

thanks for your replies, but i found out what was wrong earlier today and fixed it. Capt'n Midnight you were right partly. The PC originally came with with XP SP1, and I installed my own version SP3, this conflicted with the network card and when I checked the Compaq website they had a patch/updated drivers, i installed it and it worked.

For anyone reading this at a later date that also has same problem, the patch can be found gere:
