i wonder if anyone can help,or maybe point me in the right direction....

i have a cctv system, with securityspy running on an imac.

this is working fine, but i just can't set up the web server bit, to allow us to view the cameras remotely. i'm looking for someone good with networks, port forwarding, etc, who would be able to troubleshoot this and figure out the problem.

anybody got any suggestions of a company who might do this sort of thing? or a programmer who's good with macs?

    cheers

what kind of broadband router have you got? port forwarding is a fairly basic option to configure on most of them. are you sure the web service is secure enough to expose to the Internet?

it's an eircom netopia. i seem to be following the instructions, but it's not working. i think the problem is with my network setup, knowing which port to forward to, etc.

also, securityspy says you need to not be running DHCP, but i can't seem to setup the internet without it.

Yeah, the Netopia's are fairly straightforward for Port Forwarding. Web servers usually run on TCP port 80, so that'll be your destination port. You'll need to assign a static IP address to your Mac, otherwise the port forwarding will only work if/when the Mac has been assigned the address you specify.

    http://homepage.mac.com/car1son/static_port_fwd_staticip.html

For Eircom Netopia routers, these would normally be the network settings to assign to your Mac:

    Gateway: 192.168.1.254
    Netmask: 255.255.255.0
IP Address: 192.168.1.X (pick whatever you want for X... say 100)

Not sure what DNS servers to use, but try 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4 if all else fails.

If you're planning to access your Mac from the Internet, it might be a good idea to use a service like DynDNS to get an updateable hostname.

    tsktsk

i already have a static ip, so i know that the dns thing isn't a problam.

the cameras are on an ethernet, 192.168.0.xx, the mac connects wirelessly to the router, 192.168.1.254.

in system preferences, when i go into network, the mac has ipv4 address 192.168.1.2, but i can only access the internet using dhcp. when i tell it to use manual settings, and type in the details manually, the internet goes down.

greentree - thanks for the post, are you based in dublin?

Sounds like a DNS problem to me. When you assign the static IP and connect to your wireless router, can you ping 77.238.178.122 ? It's just www.yahoo.ie, but should be pingable if your connection is behaving.
