Converting wma to mp4 with itunes... time + quality loss issues?

I'm buying an ipod classic since I've outgrown my Creative Zen. I'm not eligible to upgrade to an iphone for a while yet and what's the point of spending all that money on an ipod touch when I'll eventually get the iphone anyway!

As a former Zen user, loads of my music is in wma format (yeah I know, not thinking ahead!) I've heard reports that converting from one compressed format (wma) to another (mp4) affects the quality of the audio. Does anyone know if it's noticeable?

Also, I have around 25Gb of music and maybe half is in wma format. How long would it take to convert say... 10Gb. I’d appreciate any advice before converting everything!

    Thanks.....
