replace gas fire with solid fuel

I have gas central heating and in the living room I have a fireplace with a gas coal-effect fire. We never use it and I would love to check whether it is possible to take it out and replace it with a solid fuel fire or a solid fuel stove.

Can this be done?

Who would do this work?

Any other options out there?

Is it just a gas flue or is there a chimney? If there is chimney then it can be done with the addition of extra pipework, exp tank etc in attic etc.

need to check that chimney is up to it and not just good enough for gas.

Unless u need a back boiler u dont need all that stuff mentioned in post 2

I'm looking to do the same at the moment. I want to replace the open coal effect gas fire with a normal open soild fuel fire.

My question is this....

I know I need a RGII person to do the work and that they will cap off the gas but do I light the fire with the capped gas pipe underneath the grate?

Or does the pipe have to be capped off at floor level or do they dig out the hearth and bury it?
