Those Oakham chickens are delicious, no M&S near me though. :(

don't waste your time with this as it is a bit of a rip-off.
The display prices include the 50% off - reduced from 9.80 to 5.90

    A half price chicken at 5.90 isn't a bargain -

    Most of this is untrue.

Firstly, display prices don't inlcude the 50% off, chickens are marked with full price, 50% off taken at checkout.
Secondly your maths is wrong. 50% off 9.80 is 4.90, not 5.90. There are plently of smaller cheaper chickens for €4 after the reduction.

Thirdly, €4 is definitely a bargain for oakham chickens, they are a big step up in taste compared to a normal 'cheap' chicken from elsewhere.

Whether its good value or not depends on the price per kilogram. Irish Bord Bia Approved chicken is always available for €5 for 2kg. at Aldi. You'd have to know the price per kg. to compare.

all I can say for certain is that the price displayed was the 50% off price Merchants Quay (Cork) . There was even an assistant standing there explaining that to the customers.
Might be different in other locations.

Just on chickens my tesco have an ongoing deal of a cooked hot chicken at the deli counter for €4, this is probably in all tesco with the cookers. Its a reasonable size, small-medium, they might look small at first but they shrink with cooking so would have probably been medium. No cleaning dishes etc, saves on electricity and I cannot cook one anywhere as good as those rotisserie ones where the meat is falling off them.

I also got the organic chickens - great saving, and I cooked one for lunch yesterday - outstanding flavour!

There is no comparison between this kind of chicken and a standard (even board bia approved) supermarket chicken. (And the Tesco 4e hot chicken is not for me, thought it was eeuuuyyyk)

I bought one of the Oakham medium-sized chickens on Saturday and cooked a few roast potatoes to go with it. A very very tasty dinner indeed! A good bargain imo :)
