Absolute thieving scum mechanics.

Today I was quoted €200 to change rear drum shoes and a bushing on an E11 corolla by 2 different mechanics. Rang a garage around the corner, €90, sorted.
I hope those bastards go out of business, trying to absolutely scam people. I feel sorry for all the unsuspecting people that theyve burned...

I got a toasted sandwich and a large tea for €5 in a cafe in Paul Street in Cork, would be the guts of a tenner in O Briens, are O Briens absolute thieving scum ?

It's just because people are not shopping around.
Some people just go to random garage, and accept price, or doesn't even ask about price before job.

I wrote here on this forum, that when I wanted to fit and balance 4 tyres to my car (30 minutes job) I was quoted in few different places prices between 30 and 100 euros.
Where does that difference comes from?

are cars sandwiches? I think the average person would know if they are getting ripped for a sandwich and a cup of tea. I suspect they might be slighty less knowledgeable whens it comes to the inner workings of car. smartar$e

yeah it's true, but its also sheer lunacy if you ask me. People still think it's ok to fork out for something before shopping around. I think it's madness that there is no regulation stopping the everyday regular person from being ripped off left right and centre.

Anyone who accepts the first quote they get before shopping around deserves to be ripped off in my opinion. That goes for everything, not just car maintenance.

the two different mechanics who quoted €200.00
can you tell us the break down of the quote please...
i.e parts costs, labour hours, cost per hour, where the parts OEM or supurious...

And likewise for the mechanic who quoted €90.00

also what are the set ups like.... i.e what type of garages do they operate from????

    the tyre thing is different
they were punishing, for want of a better word, you for buying the tyres elsewhere

but shop around is still the answer i'm a reatailler and i see people shop around more that ever which is great as i was always propperly priced and now people see that

good business will survive this bad will faill but they will struggle on the way down

both independent garages. both getting the parts from the same place. Apparently brake shoes a bushing and a bottle of brake fluid costs €110 according to joker number 1.

The other guys was straight up. He said around 25-30 for shoes, 2-3 for bushing and then the labour on top.

Two identical quotes and a third that was half the price? I think the third guy simply knew soemthing the first two didn't.

They're probably over-priced because of lazy parts searches. That in itself wouldn't make them thieving scum.

What bushing costs only €2/€3 ? The rubbers than exhausts hang off cost more than that.

I see the cheaper guy isn't doing as much work, maybe not all the difference but worth noting.

    Yeah

that may be true but if you're in business you have GOT to find the cheapest supplier, otherwise you will find yourself having to price yourself out of the market or end up with huge costs and unable to survive

If one guy can source parts, and if the others are in any way clever in their trade, they'll find a similar supplier. If they dont then they deserve to go out of business

this could also be true, but I asked him to change the rear brake drums and the bushing, nothing else. So he's being a bollox by charging to do more work than I asked.

brake drums and brake shoes are 2 different things, if ya made a bollox of telling them what ya wanted done how can ya blame them

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 6,096 ✭✭✭johnos1984

Possibly, and I'm not making an excuse for the high price, the other two garages were going to do a good job using the best parts so that in the long run you would be better off.

Just a thought, just because something is cheaper doesn't always make it better.

Well said guil. Brake drums are expensive enough OP.

Some indy garages will use only genuine parts, maybe thats what they do.

where the first two for OEM parts????

Do you mean by independant garages, they where car sales palces with proper service facilties?

the cheaper guy was he an independant gargage? or a back street mechanic...

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,990 ✭✭✭JustAddWater

    Then its catch 22

Is the low price garage actually using quailty parts or is the high priced garage using quality parts?

Its an argument that cant be won!

One will argue cheaper is better and the other that quality is better. The customer demads both!

I actually said shoes for the back brakes. I just wrote the wrong thing there by accident.

They were using spurious parts from a local motor factors.

@Anan1 I created this thread to vent my frustration, not to have people making stupid comments to get "thanks", hence the insult..

they were all independent service facilities.

    No

Why don't people realise that in the end it's the customers that set the prices

    1. If you think a comment's stupid then say why. Insulting the person who made it gives the impression that you can't.

    2. If you've an issue with moderation then by all means PM me, but don't argue about it on-thread.

Very true :D I've had my run ins with Anan too I may add, also I have about 15 or so bans / infractions / warnings so how the mod team can be seen to be favouring me is a tad strange. I was called a smartarse because the OP didn't like my post. Not my fault anyone thanked it either.

Back to the OP, I asked already, did you tell the two garages they were absolute thieving scum ?
I also asked you what bushing costs only €3 ish ??????

PS, lads, few quid in the post for the thanks, much appreciated.

Questioning how 'hard' the OP is in real life doesn't really prove much either way though, does it?

Taking a step back for a moment, it's a difficult one to judge on t'internet. On the one hand, mechanics are often misjudged by punters high on paranoia and low on knowledge/commonsense. On the other hand, i've seen far too many cases of friends being quoted one price and my getting a far lower one after a few minutes on the phone.

Personally, had I had the OP's experience, i'd have suspected it but not said it.

I have said something along the lines of that before and not just to garages.

It can go either way. Many times I've been told to **** off while others seemed happy to negotiate. Depends on the place though and how greasy the mechanic your dealing with :D

As Anan just pointed out you need to know what your talking about, or at the very least you need to LOOK like you know what your talking about
