    Go Slow Initiative
    Garda Mobile Safety Cameras

    Safety cameras will:
    • Increase compliance with speed limits across the entire road network
    • Reduce speed at locations that have a speed related collision history
    • Act as a deterrent to driving at excessive speeds
An Garda Síochána has partnered with GoSafe to operate safety cameras in Ireland on behalf of the organisation.

Safety cameras will be in operation from mid November 2010 at locations across Irish roads. The locations will shortly be listed on www.Garda.ie.

The introduction of the safety cameras will mean a reduction in speed and improved road safety for the community as a whole.

Irish roads have historically had high collision rates, compared to similar countries. Driver speeding is a recognised factor in collisions. The use of safety cameras will have a significant effect in decreasing speeding levels which will directly reduce the rate of fatalities and serious injuries from collisions on the roads in Ireland.

The safety cameras will operate during day and night-time hours, regardless of weather conditions. Where it is safe, the vans will monitor and survey both sides of the road simultaneously. The safety cameras will be operated by trained GoSafe personnel.
A new specific Garda office, the Office for Safety Camera Management (OSCAM), will determine the locations and times of on-road operations of the safety camera operations.

In the initial period, up to 6,000 camera hours will be provided at geographically dispersed locations on a monthly basis. Ongoing surveys will allow An Garda Síochána to build up a picture of where speeding is happening.

The safety camera project will reduce collisions on our roads and save lives.
