Dental Implant

    Hi,
Am going to get implant on front tooth next year. Have been reading up on the process, and TBH, am a bit apprehensive about it. The thought of someone drilling into the jaw bone brings out a shiver. Hope this isn't a silly question, but how big is the bit used? Does it take long to do, and how painful does it get, once the LA wears off?

    Thanks in advance

Op have a read of this, (http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=2055942417) its my own implant experience.

To summarise, a couple of injections into the front of the gum and one in the palate which is painful (for me anyway) after a few mins you are completely numb and the dentist goes to work, you can hear the drill obviously but you cant feel anything. My initial appointment was for 2 hours, but i was out after 90 mins, but its not 90 mins of drilling dont worry :)

I was given anti biotics, mouthwash and painkillers after the procedure and I drove from Belfast to Dublin after it. I had some light bleeding that night as i had my head mashed into the pillow but i had no ill effects.

Back 3.5 months later to get everything finished, couldnt be happier and i'm actually going for a check up on it tomorrow.

Its like having a tooth out but in reverse. Very straightforward procedure usually. Like any surgical procedure there are some risks and some swelling and healing afterwards, that well controlled with antibiotics and pain killers.

I have four implants in for a couple of weeks now. My dentist put some kind of paste on the roof of my mouth before he gave me the injections and i felt nothing. I was given antibiotics and a mouthwash before he started the work. I felt nothing as he worked away and to be honest there is more drilling done for a filling. When he was finished he gave me painkillers that last for six hours, and a script for antibiotics, and the painkillers. I also had to use a mouthwash. Next day i was very swollen, and the following day i was black and blue. This face lasted for over a week, but no pain at all. I would go trough it again for other teeth. Go for it.

    Hi Folks ,

Just a couple of questions on this...

Tooth next to the front tooth has been missing about 9 years now , will there be sufficient bone for an implant to hold after 9 years ?(teeth either side don't feel to have moved during this time)

Also , when the initial implant is fitted do they place a temporary crown to the implant while it is setting to the bone , and fit the permanent crown after the 4-6 month period ?

    Thanks

Don't be scared, getting an implant was one of the easiest dental procedures I've ever gone through, less painful than a simple cleaning even. Other than the injections it was painless and it was certainly a lot less traumatic then getting the tooth out.

The hardest bit was keeping your mouth open for the length of time it took while Mr dentist and assistant did their stuff. The drilling and so on was absolutely painless. The most painful bit was a throbbing gum for a few days afterwards, but painkillers and being careful with what you ate solved that.

The thing I was most surprised at was how industrial it all seemed to be. Beating things with hammers, messing around screwing stuff into your jaw. It was fascinating in a way ;)

If you have a dead tooth removed can an Implant be placed on the site of the extraction the same day?

Is a temporary crown fitted the day implant is placed or is it a few days later?

Sometimes its can it depends on what the bone is like when the tooth comes out.

Sometimes it depends on how tight the implant is going in, it a bit more risky IMHO but advisable in certain circumstances.
