Hi I was wondering if I could get some adivce on this, My facebook page was hacked into a few days ago by someone I know, the reason i know it was them is that four people who we both are friends with were blocked from my page that night. The hacker also posted really awfull things on my page claiming I was a prostitute ect, I was at work when this happend and two of my friends called me to tell me what was going on, when I tried to log on to facebook my password was changed, facebook infromed me of malicious activity and in order to get a new password i had to identify my friends and answer security questions ect, I went to the police to make a statement about this today now i know this sounds very childish bit the point is I dont want this to keep happening, has this happend to abyoner her before and if so dose anyone know what futher action i can take against this person, btw the person who did this is not my friend on facebook and i had this person blocked for a long time

You can't take any firther action really. Posting nasty stuff about someone on their Facebook isn't a crime. Best action now is just to change ALL your passwords and possibly your email address.

Well you see the person hacked into my account and pretend to be me when they posted these things

Same as above, change your logon email address and your password also. I would be inclined to do this for everything else you logon to online also.

Nasty stuff said anywhere including Facebook is a crime. No idea how much the guards can do.

It wasn't hacked. He found your password. I think people describing this sort of stuff as hacking is a bad idea. Hacking has connotations of someone doing something clever, or having unusual skills. This encourages the morons who do it.

    Possibilities:
You have a guessable one, or they saw you type it slowly, or you have it written down, or you told someone else.

They could have phished for it. This involves setting up a fake login page, which records the password typed in. You would have been sent a link to the fake page so you should check recent emails for links - not just from the person you think did it, and not just for facebook if you reuse passwords.

There might be a small possibility there is a keylogger or something installed on your computer so you should run a virus scanner. What would be more likely would be that they had one installed on their own computer, if you used it at all.

If you use gmail, it has a handy feature where it records activity on your account, including the ip address. There are Websites that help you identify ip addresses also (tell you the rough location).

I happen to know quite a bit about this subject. (sorry for the long post guys but if anyone else doesnt want to get hacked I would suggest you look at this too)

First off OP the Gardai won't do anything about this. They'll take your details and statement but thats it. The guards wont do anything more and if you inquired about it, they will just fob you off (Sadly this is a fact)

If you want to stop this from happening again you just got to learn abit about how someone can access your facebook or email. And it doesnt require hacking knowledge. Heck anyone reading this thread can hack someone else.

The most obvious is that if someone looks while you put in your password... yes obvious I know but believe it or not thats not the way most people get hacked. Its from the following:
    • All email accounts have a security question (as you probably know) the flaw is that most email providers (such as hotmail.com) list generic questions as security questions. Other providers ask you to create a question and answer (as hotmail does offer to) but the problem is such questions can be easily quessed and or questions that someone who knew you would know the answer too (lack of creativity). Great examples would be "where was your mother born?", "what is your favourite movie?" or "favourite food?" etc - heck, such answers is often found on a persons social networking site (bebo, myspace etc)
    >> A person who wants access to your account can be creative. I left out two of the most easiest (but hardest questions to guess on hotmail) They are "whats the name of your first pet?" and "whats your mothers maiden name?" - they're hard to guess right? ... But easy to find out.
There is a playful game called "whats your pornstar name?" - you ask them to combine their first pets name with their mothers maiden name. Boom. I've got my answer. You're hacked.

Bascially :P the moral of the story is everything has a backdoor. Even boards.ie - they will send you an email to gain access to your account. Your email account asks personal information in the case of a lost password. That is the weakpoint. Your email. If thats not strong, you can be hacked.

You know, I would actually like to see presidents for some sort of legal action. If someone spray painted those same comments on you actual house wall they would be done for vandalism. However there is such a thing as virtual fallacy, which basically means that just because it's virtual doesn't make it any less offensive. It is destruction of property.

You might be able to pursue charges of 'identity theft' or something of the like, but I honestly don't know how you'd go about doing that.

I'm no expert on this, but from listening to various news reports on this kind of thing, I gather the internet is pretty much a free for all when it comes to this kind of thing. I'm not sure there are actually any laws in place to protect people's privacy...part of the reason why the Gardai won't /can't do anything.

It seems to an ongoing battle between internet providers/search engines/courts.

What about if someone set up a page with a name.slightly changed from yours and posted stuff that was exaggerated about you but that everyone knew who it was reffering to. Saw that happening recently with someone. Sure if it ddoesnt mention you name where would you stand?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,980 ✭✭✭meglome

There's a phase for it and I believe it's called 'fraping'. Usually associated with friends doing it for the laugh though not always. I know a guy who was banned from facebook a few weeks ago because of what was posted on it my someone else. Once he spoke to FB they put him back on.

You've just got to be careful with your facebook password. If you use wireless and firefox put the firefox add-on ForceHTTPS in. Then you can set facebook to only use a secure http connection so it can't be intercepted.

Oh he hacked into the facebook user database undetected to call you names.
Sorry for suggesting that he just stole your password by his trickery or your complacency.

Im not sure if your trying to be sarcastic by that comment but i can assure you that it is not in any way smart or funny, not only was i called names on my page but friends on my page were blocked and awful claims were being made about me, now if someone came up to me and said those things or if they said them about me i would just turn a blind eye but this person hacked into my account pretended to be me changed my password ect so now maybe you can understand why im annoyed, and futher more as this person has done it once despite me changing my password and email there is no doubt they will do it again unless serious action is taken

You've already said what happened. A few people have given good suggestions how to prevent it happening again. You've ignored them. You've only shown interest in comments that you think could undermine the drama of your story.

I see you're not interested in mundane practical suggestions. I will try to supply what you are looking for:

OMG that's unbelievable! It sounds like they're obsessed with you! It's terrible when spiteful jealous creeps try to bring down good positive people! Make sure you tell everyone you know, so they realise it wasn't you saying you were a prostitute! The guards won't listen they don't care! You need to get a solicitor who specialises in cases like this. Just remember, they're only doing this because they're jealous of what a great person you are!

not only was i called names on my page

What's that Skip?! Somebody called ya names on the internet? Strewth!

I think you're doing well in life OP if your friends not being able to reach you on Facebook is the sum of your worries, get some perspective for God's sake and stop making mountains out of molehills.

Stop being equally as dramatic by making ridiculous suggestions. Nobody said she has to like it but minor upsets are part and parcel of life. However, it's your own choice whether you make a big issue out of them or deal with it and get on with things.

Not much more you can do. Just be careful where you are using accessing your accounts. It is very very easy to access someones Facebook, especially if you are using a wireless network. Anyone that is on that same wireless network can easily intercept your details, no "hacking" experience required!

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 9,608 ✭✭✭Spud83

LOL yes somebody hacked into Facebook just to call you names. You do know the risks they would be taking to actually hack into Facebook don't you? They would be subject to some very strict laws, both in Europe and the US. Somebody is not going to take those risks to call a person names. The may do it to get all the information such as passwords an emails off accounts, or to take Facebook down as some kind of ego thing, but not to call you names. You ain't that important.

Also is this person some kind of computer genius, and when I say genius I actually mean it. Facebook have some of the smartest people in IT working for them, hacking them would not be an easy job, and is probably close to impossible for one person.

They either figured out your password, figured out your email password or secret question, or you left yourself signed in on Facebook somewhere.

Change your password, don't use a secret question (at least don't answer them truthfully or even relative to the question), post a status update saying you got fraped, move on with your life.

It is most likely they got into your email account using the security question, sent off to facebook that they forgot the password(as the password was changed), new password sent and ta da they are in.

so I suggest just changing your passwords using upper and lower cases so no one could ever guess it. Do this for all your accounts, email, facebook, myspace or whatever else.

Obviously no one is going to post nasty stuff about themselves online to all their friends so just say i got fraped or whatever it is and laugh about it.

    Mo big deal :)

Hi thanks for the replies, well most of them anyway, i am only too aware that there are bigger things to worry about in life but when someone dose this , to me its unexceptable, i have had problems with this person before and i have cut them out of my life completely but this person cleary has no life of their own hence why they would do this, im not looking for sympathy from anyone and as ive said before i have very difficult email passwords and facebook passwords which would be almost impossible to guess, all i want is to get this person out of my life completely and im hoping the police can do something to help as people like the person who hacked my facebook account need to learn a very sharp lesson and fast!
