    Guys,

If i have location services switched on for an app such as google maps or nav free, will location services waste battery even when i don't have any of these apps on?

Does it transmit a signal even when an app that uses it is not on or does it use battery only when called upon?

    Regards
    muchos04

A little location arrow is displayed beside the battery life indicator when ever the iPhone is using location services. App developers are supposed to only use these sort of services when needed by their app. So it will vary from app to app but is easy to see if it is being used.

IMO this also proves that some apps DO NOT close when you hit the home button. i have 2 or 3 apps that when you exit them, they are not closed and the location services will still be transmitted for hours on end!

thats why i kill any apps in my multitasking tray.

+1 on this....in my experience not all apps fully close, as stated, best to terminate them

The narrower a man’s mind, the broader his statements.

sorry guys this might sound stupid but how do you terminate them? I always thought hitting the home button does terminate an app and referring to the poster above how do you 'kill' and app in the multitasking tray?

@muschos04 - if you double tap the home button to display your multitask tray - then press and hold the app icon it will display an "-" on the icon (and the icon will shake).

you can now press teh "-" to kill it

so just to clarify, if i have no apps running but location services is turned ON will this drain ANY of my battery ?

my thinking was that it location services is OFF then absolutely no drain. but if ON, then slight drain as its on stand by ?

only when the little arrow head is present in the top right corner of your screen.

I did a little test the other night to see if the apps where draining the battery when just pressing the home button compaired to killing them with the douple tap.

7 hour sleep phone at 100% battery.

With apps still on, battery was 93% the next morning.

When I killed the apps the next night the battery was at 99% the next morning.

I think this proves that the apps do drain the battery when not closed properly.

I have noticed certain apps do drain the battery more than others when they are on in the background. But i think it varies app to app and by how they were developed.

To really test this you would need to set airline mode on and turn off all other communications protocols, wifi, bluetooth etc. This would give a true battery usage for apps running in the background.

I agree except for the use of the (highlighted) word 'and' because turning on Airplane mode switches off all of the communications protocols, that's precisely what it's for, nothing else.

    So it does.

But you are able to switch these back on one by one. While airplane mode is still on.

    Interesting, didn't know that, thanks.
