Garda Commissioner Fachtna Murphy has announced that he is to retire at the end of the year after three years as head of the force.

He made the announcement at the end of a two-day garda management conference in Templemore this afternoon.

A native of Timoleague in Co Cork, Fachtna Murphy has served in the gardaí for 43 years in every rank and senior position before he was appointed Commissioner in 2007.

He was the first head of the Criminal Assets Bureau when it was set up in 1996 following the murders of the journalist Veronica Guerin and Detective Garda Gerry McCabe.

    He retires on 31 December.

So how is this going to effect the recruitment embargo?

Blue Belle will be the next Commissioner :D

Seriously , I don't think who holds the number 1 slot will make a dfference to the recruitment situation one way or another.

I agree, don't think a change in commissioner will make much of a difference. It's all about the spons and the country's not exactly flush! But I live in eternal hope along with everyone else that Ahern will root in behind the couch in the dail bar & find a bit of spare change that would facilitate our training!

Yeah I know what you mean, but doesn't the recruitment emabrgo include promotions aswell?

I mean, if I understand it correctly, upon Murphys retirement, the Commissioner position will remain vacant untill the emabrgo is lifted?
Or will they quickly adapt to draft a commissioner in to save face?
Or will this hopefully kick start recruitment?

It wont be long till a replacement is appointed, already 2 front runners for the post.

But can they promote someone to Commissioner during the recruitment embargo?

Of course, the have filled 170 other posts throughout the embargo, its not a position they can function without

    My bad.

I thought the recruitment embargo included promotions.

I don't think anyone on this forum is going to get the job.

    My bad.

I thought the recruitment embargo included promotions.

Its supposed to, they need to apply to Dept of Finance to get permission.
Just like the embargo is supposed to include recruiting army, prison officers and admin for TD's but they seem to look after certain areas more than recruiting Gardai.
