The website Quiet Earth is pretty much an excellent source for reviews on Post Apocalyptic films and books. It's gone off the boil a bit and moved into reviewing other films and books outside the genre, but the link will provide a comprehensive list of films and books you can check out. Hope this helps.

Em, I've sure you've already seen 28 Days Later. It's great. The Omega Man is worth a watch (especially for the Cloakies)....of course Zombieland; Dawn of the Dead and Romero's early work. I thought The Road was a much better film that the Book of Eli; it's just incredibly bleak and depressing, so I couldn't recommend it.

Blindness is one that comes to mind, I really enjoyed that film, Maybe enjoyed is the wrong word... its very grim, but certainly worth a watch!

Just so I'm sure OP, you are specifically looking for post-apocalyptic films and not general dystopian films, which would broaden the scope considerably.

Lists of Post-Apocalyptic films can't exist without mentioning...

    ZARDOZ!!!

Only Sean Connery could affably pull off thigh height leather boots.

The Daddy of all post apocalyptic movies= The Day After.

It describes in frightening reality the build up of hostilities during the Cold War between the West and Russia, which eventually results in a full strategic nuclear exchange between the two sides.
In my opinion, this should be mandatory viewing for all those half baked dreamers who think we can all just throw down our weapons and have a big world party.

Free on youtube, here is part one.

I'd agree with you...to a certain point. The build-up is frightening and utterly compelling, but the apocalypse itself is misguided. Sorry to sound so flippant here, but there are some laughable moments which beggar belief, namely during the strike, in which
some insane couple are having a wedding! :pac: Also it’s far fetched that people would turn into glowing skeletons at the moment of the strike happens. It looks cheesy as hell
The post apocalyptic part of the film cushions the aftermath and resembles a typical 70's disaster movie and ends with a sentimental glimmer of hope, suggesting that America has paid a terrible price, but has learned from it.

There is a much more disturbing British film called Threads which came out about a year after. It deals with the post apocalypse head on and is utterly bleak. It shows how
government, society and particularly education, would fall apart completely and how hunger and disease would be rife (not to mention cannibalism and either stillborn or mutated babies).
This is all conveniently glossed over in The Day After. That said at least The Day After convinced Reagan to change his mind on American nuclear policy. You can't quite say the same thing with Threads and that lunatic Thatcher.

The Day After pops up on the CBS channels now and then. Testament which was made the same year is apparently much better but was hardly seen, whereas the Day After was a big TV movie seen by a vast number on its debut.

Mad Max 2 anyone? Don't tell me running out of petrol isn't apocalyptic.

Not technically a Post Apocalyptic film but one that signalled the ecological dangers facing the planet back in 1973 is Soylent Green.

Its also famous as the final film of Edward G. Robinson who puts in an excellent performance as Sol Roth, Charlton Hestons/Detective Thorns assistant.

Its well worth a watch as its a solid story with some good acting and thought provoking concepts.

I haven't heard of Testament, will definately check it out though. As for Mad Max 2? I was always pissed at myself for having seen this first in a pan and scan VHS during the early nineties. It really needs to be seen on the big screen to be fully appreciated. It's a classic. :)

It's a very good film, but sadly everyone seems to know the infamous ending, but not many people have seen the actual film. Shame.

yeah for some reason post apocalyptic films have got "real" latley which IMO has taken alot of the fun out of em.

theyre not BAD films, its just jesus sometimes ya just want a laugh or a bit of adventure ala the mad max films.

in that light heres some of the ones that lean on the lighter side of the apocalypse.

    resident evil 2 .

probably the most fun of the series. daft - but got some great action and a genuinly lovely looking nuke attack at the end. for the game fans also the most faithfull.

    the running man

arnie classic set in the future. not so much post apocalyptic , but post societal collapse. again great action with the prerequisit arnie one liners "eee 'ad to spliiiit !"

    escape from new york

snake pliskin, need i say more :)

    robot jox

cheesy to the max sci fi film about battling giant robots representing countries that fight for sectors of the earth after conventional warfare nearly put the human race out of existance. kinda like power rangers meets gladiator but a gas laugh if your in the mood.

    legion

god gets pissed at man and sends his hosts to wipe us out. more actual apocalypes than post but a good ol laugh none the less , if only to see angels with shotguns

    :)

An excellent animated film on the topic would be When The Wind Blows.

Very touching and poignant in places, and the characters, although animated, feel very real indeed.

A Boy and his Dog is another that although quite dated at this point, it is a quirky little film based upon the novella of the same name, and is one of the main inspirations behind the Fallout series of games.

Don Johnsons first big screen role I think.

On the Beach 1959, from the Neville Shute novel is worth a mention. Virus/Fukkatsu no hi (1980) a Japanese megamovie. Due to a copywrite boo-boo you can download it from
the http://www.archive.org/details/Virus_Fukkatsu_no_hi its the complete Japanese edit.

if you are looking for some tv then the very good series set after nuclear attacks on America is Jericho and just started this week is the Zombie apocalyptic series The Walking Dead which is being directed by Frank "Shawshank" Darabont

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 11,631 ✭✭✭✭Hank Scorpio

This is my favourite genre along with zombie movies :p

Heres an excellent movie that really struck me, "Last night"

    http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0156729/

Another really excellent one as previously mentioned is "The Road"

    http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0898367/

    Weary, depressing but also wonderful!

"I am legend" is also a very decent movie, maybe not as good as the above two, but still worth a watch!

    http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0480249/

IMO this is just as good if not better than the original "Dawn of the dead"(Well ok not better :p). The remake is really modern and well made

    http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0363547/

Cloverfield is really really good too, was released in 2008

    http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1060277/

Finally if your looking for something to scare ya sh1tless, check out this gem!

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1038988/ <- Not an apocalytic movie but a great movie slightly aimed in that manner

Double edit! Theres also a new series which has just started called "The Walking dead" First episode is floating around. Gotta say I found it amazing personally.

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1520211/ 9.5 rating cant be too shoddy :)

I`d advoid the book of eli, i thought it was complete and utter sh1te!

It is a direct adaptation of the long running comic series of the same name. If it is even half as good as the comic, then it will be a really good tv series.

I would also recommend Threads, IMO it's the ultimate post-apocalyptic film, also worth a look is the war game, made in 1965, a fairly realistic look of what would have happened in UK at that time

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,358 ✭✭✭seraphimvc

i think all the post-apocalytic zombie moves are all mentioned lol so i dont care what people say about what i am recommending here:

    1.Waterworld
    2.Judge Dredd
:P they are my favourites post-apocalyptic films from the last 1/2 century.

Island is a good watch too.

It's on tomorrow night at 10pm on FX. Looking forward to it as I loved the graphic novels I read (well 1-4 anyway).

Can I put Dr Strangelove in here?

I know it's more pre than post apocalyptic, but it's a great watch all the same.

Cubric doing what he does best (basically directing any type of genre)

The non-union Mexican equivalent director of such classics as A Clockwork Onion and Tortilla :p

How did I get that so wrong. Thank you for the grammar lesson.

Obviously it's spelled Kubrick (well it was obvious after I googled it ;))
