Driver Shaft Length

I am thinking about reducing the length of my driver. It's 45 inches - so I'm thinking of taking 3/4 or 1 inch off, probably off the grip end so not to alter the flex. I'm not too concerned about any changes to the swingweight.

Driver is a Ping Rapture with a Grafalloy Proto Comp NT 65g Stiff shaft.

So has anyone here done this? My aim is to feel more in control of the clubhead - and feel like I can stand a bit closer to or cover the ball more.

Interested to hear of anyone who tried it and the results...

    Cheers, Kevin

greg normans used a cut down driver for his entire career, the best driver of the golf ball of all time imo.

I got an inch taken off the butt end of my driver during the summer (now 44 inches), and it has improved my accuracy and had no negative effect on my distance. It has improved my consistency of contact and my cnfidence over the ball, I feel much more comfortable really going after drives. It did take a week or two to get used to it, and I now have a couple of strips of lead tape on the head to lift the swing weight.

I have also experienced the other end of the spectrum, I tried out a 48" 6 degree Long drive driver for a while, which was a lot of fun and allowed me to hit the odd big bomb, but IMO with the Long stick you are better off hitting it in the sweet spot more often and being consistent.

Would you not just thicken up the bottom of the grip as necessary and grip down an inch or so, like Sergio Garcia or Anthony Kim ? Try that for a while before making an alteration.....

I haven't shortened my driver, but at the start of the summer I started gripping down the shaft almost at the bottom of the grip. I have improved my accuracy no end and I am actually hitting it further.
Don't think I'll bother shortening my driver, but the next time I buy a driver I will definitely get one with a shorter shaft.

I got an inch taken off my Ping G10 driver in the summer because I found I was gripping down on it all the time. Ive a lot more confidence over the ball now and am far more consistent I find. I havnt noticed any reduction in distance either and the club feels no different with regards swingweight. Obviously you are not going to find the fairway every time just because you got an inch taken off but your consistency should improve with your new found confidence when standing over the ball.

Thanks a lot for the replies so far.

I have been gripping down a bit on the driver lately and thats really where the idea came from that I would be better off having it shortened.

Glad to hear the positive results the lads have talked about so far - I'm not expecting miracles but improving consistency is what it's all about!

cutting the shaft is not a big deal if it is not working you can just as easly replace the lenght. To check if you are playing with the right lenght shaft simply put an impact sticker or masking tape on the face of the driver and play a round and at the end of the round you will see quite clearly where the impact is and the you will know.when it comes to feel lead tape is the way to go.hope this helps

Last week my driving was appalling so this week I placed my grip further down the shaft. Much more consistent and no real loss of distance. Very happy with it :)

when you are talking about grip moveing down the shaft it should only be looked at as a short term ting just an experment, because grips are made for differan't hand size and there is a reasion for that it has to do with ball flight control a grip is a verry important part of the club and should be changed regleary, they are made to wear not to last forever and if thay were thay would not sell them
