Passat seats burning

Today as I left home I could smell burning within a few minutes of starting the car. I noticed it a couple of times in the last few weeks but assumed it was oil or something in the engine bay. Today I noticed smoke coming up from the side of my seat. The heated seats were set at 3 so I knocked them off straight away. On Googling it, I found a load of references to the problem. The car is a 2004 Passat TDi Highline.
It's a b@stard because the weather is getting cold and working at night, the heated seats were lovely. Does anyone have any experience of this? How much will this set me back? I presume any recalls have ran out. I only have it 4 months but it was a private sale in the north.

It's possible to fit aftermarket heated seats to a car but I'm not sure about replacing original ones. If they're putting out smoke then I'd imagine they're pretty much fecked!!

Hot bit happens when the heating wire gets pinched by something (like a solid heavy object placed on the seat in the past) creating a spot of high resistance in the wire, which then heats up more than the rest.

If you don't want to splash out for a new heating element you could try to snip out the damaged bit of wire and solder the two ends together. Haven't worked with VW, but there is probably a zip to peel out the seat fabric hidden somewhere. Good luck.
