    Hello all,

im 24, 12'3 stone, reasonably fit, play football nd lift weights a good bit, now i did feel sluggish but i still think this is fairly high,

nd the heart rate monitor was correctly positioned

    Andrew,

Heart rates vary. If you are low on water, it will go up at the same training intensity (pace, if you will). If you are depleted of sugar, it will go down. If it is hot or you have too much clothing, it will go up at the same intensity, too. If you are nervous, it will go up because you are packed with adrenaline. If you are overtrained and run hard, your legs may feel it but your heart rate may not be high enough to show you that you are straining because you are not producing adrenaline due to adrenal fatigue.

Wear it for a number of runs over the same distance and record your avg heart rates. This zone may simply be normal for you, it wouldnt be unreasonable.

    ^ What he said.

It's not that crazy an HR and it won't really mean anything until you know what is normal for you under different circumstances.

Were you comfortable at this pace (8:20/mile, HR 175)?
If you were, then Robinph might be right and this might just be you.
Or maybe you were running at a pace too fast for your ability at the moment.
If not, it might merit further investigation.

    Good luck.

I have a really high one too - for the Adidas series 10 mile race I had an average heartrate of 188. Now I felt pretty bad during that but its not abnormal for my heartrate to be in the 170's on a not very hard run. When I do a hard run/intervals it would hit the high 180's

Two guys in our club, of a similar performance level (+-2 mins over the marathon). One has a heart rate I would consider through the roof, the other a rate so low that you would question if he was still alive

the point being - you need to establish what is normal for you....
