there is sometimes a tradition in club games that they both wear their county colours in a colour clash.

The old way of changing strips was
    Inter County
Provincial Champions change to their provincial colours.
If not champions, wear county champions colours.
    Club
    County Champions, wear county colours.
If not, change to "sister" club colours, i.e. if hurling only club, wear the colours of the club you send players to play football.
If you don't have the above, source alternative colours to be arranged in advance, home team normally change but that is up to the discussion.

All the above was before sponsorship was really in place and was just common sense to be honest. Since the open draw as well as more "design" into jerseys most counties will have alternative jerseys nominated well in advance and available to them. Clare have played Tipperary 100s of times and I can only remember them changing jerseys once and that was the 1993 Munster Final. My club won the county championship and in Munster were told a week in advance that they would have to change jerseys, this caused a bit of a panic because it was going to a nightmare to source alternative jerseys, they ended up getting the jerseys of the club that the played football with and putting stickers over the sponsors logo, didn't matter though cause they were able to play in their own jerseys anyway cause they were different designs.

I reffed a match once between 2 teams with exactly the same colours and design, neither team had an alternative and 1 was adament that they wouldn't change, I ended up tossing a coin and making 1 team wear their jerseys inside out (I consoltated with other refs :))

1 of the most famous pieces of GAA history took place with both teams wearing alternative jerseys, wonder who can name that :)

    Cork vs Down?? Hardly....

As far as I'm concerned its Salthill vs St. Galls 2006. Terribly dull game but what a night out afterwards:D. Salthill wore maroon and St Galls wore yellow (as both traditionally wore blue).

Nope, not Cork and Down, but then again every piece of GAA history is history to someone :)

Most nights out in Galway after matches are great nights, I played for a team up there a few times (can't remember my name now though ;)) and after every match there was always a session

I think it involved a certain kingdoms drive for 5, and a man named Darby burying it the dying seconds ;)

That's the one, well done TG

Another question, my county won a match that was to "win" something that will never be won again with both teams wearing alternative jerseys. This match took place in the past couple of years, any ideas?

Was it a Junior hurling All Ireland in 1993 which predated the intermediate championship in terms of the strong counties participating?

Kerry and Offaly clashed in 1981 also, think it may have been the semi final,Kerry wore the all blue strip of Munster and i think:confused:Offaly wore white.

Clare played tipp during the 80s,Clare wore saffron while Tpp played in blue if i remember correctly.

As regards clubs....... Recently St Breckans won the intermediate championship in clare and there was a photo of the Breckans intermediate team from 1982 who beat lissycasey in the final,Breckans wore miltown malbays jerseys that day as both teams had maroon jerseys.

Id imagine its up to the home team to have alternative jerseys on standby should the ref require a change.

Yep, in last seasons Leinster Championship, Garrycastle wore Westmeaths jerseys and Clongish wore Longfords jerseys.

Didnt Sligo beat Kildare I think in the qualifiiers about 10 years ago while wearing their away strip of all black and then changed the county home jersey to black because of it?

The relegation semi between Wexford and Clare had both teams in their alternative jerseys. I can't remember seeing Clare in the change kit too often, so it must be that? That would count as a "win" and nobody will ever have to do that again.

    Well done that poster :)

A friend of mine owes me 1 of those jerseys (he played/squad member) but I know I'm never going to get that jersey

Why there is promotion to Liam McCarthy now, but not relegation from?....

Anyways back on topic, Moyle Rovers played the Kerry champions in the tipp shirts last year and Toomevara wore them v Newtownshandrum in 2003 tho both Ballyhale and Toomevara wore their change (or at least i think it was Ballyhales change) in 07. Mullinahone changed v Toom in county semi in 2006, i think Toom may have wore yellow themselves that day.

Love the way Kerry refuse to wear their away when playing Mayo (or anybody else for that matter)...as if they have trouble beating them anyway

We had the farce in 2006 AI final and the 2005 quarter final when Mayo and Kerry were both wearing predominately green jerseys. In the 2004 AI Mayo changed to their away but Kerry refused in 2005 and 2006 when the teams met.

Seriously gets to me, just because Meath hammered them in 2001 when they were wearing their away I don't think they have worn an alternative strip since in any important championship game.

    Very sporting of them.

The GAA should have in place rules, it's very hard to see on TV when just colour clashes take place.

The Limerick boys equally as stubborn. GAA should simply say wear your away to both if they dont come to an agreement and if they still dont fine the lard out of them

As with a lot of rules, I would adopt the Rugby rule of the home team changes, it wouldn't be difficult to do up a list of every team and point out potential conflicts well in advance.

Always thought that that both teams had to change.

Played an under 14 county final years ago and both teams playing changed.

Kerry played in Blue back in 01 (I think it was 01?) against Meath (Meath played in gold) and got Murdered. That might be why they are reluctant to change.

When Limerick played Meath in 09 in Portlaoise both Limerick and Meath changed.

EDIT: Just saw WesternZulu's post there

remember my first game in croke park was the AI semi in 1990 meath v donegal both changed to their provincal colours and at 6 years old i was wondering why meath changed at all because all that changed was the gold parts of the jersey were white!!

I thought Ballintober wore red with white trim and Killererin wore white with red trim so there wouldnt have been a clash.
But for that game Ballintober were wearing Mayo jerseys!

True. There would have been less of a colour clash if they both wore their normal kits. Ballintubber wear red jerseys and white shorts. Killererin white jerseys and red shorts.

fair enough ballintober wanted to wear mayo jersies why didnt they get the home mayo ones with the green trim

Colour clashes are one of my biggest GAA-related bugbears, so much so that I wrote an article about it two years ago (see attached)!

@Clareman - Clare changed against Tipp in a football replay in 1998, they wore white

The worst clash I've seen was the 2002 Kerry county hurling final between Kilmoyley (seen here in green and gold shirts white shorts ;) ) and Lixnaw (seen here in...you get the picture!)

Erins Own and St Finbarrs Cork both changed for their championship game recently. EO are normally blue with the red strip across the middle, Barrs are normally blue, EO wore all red, Barrs wore yellow jersies

It's ridiculous. It was even worse a few of years ago (06 or 07 I think) in the Leinster final when Dublin had the darker jerseys. Why can't one of them just change?!
