    Hi there

I'm moving home from England and I'm trying to get some info on shoots in Ireland, and how I can possibly get involved. I have two working gundogs, one who is field trial trained that I hope to pick up with, and one who is an excellent beating dog.

Any tips or direction? I'm in north county dublin but am willing to travel.

    Thanks, emer.

    Hi Emer,

You could try joining the breed club for your dog and get back into the trialling. This will show you places that could be close to you that need beaters or pickers up plus put you in touch with like minded lads who may point you in the right direction.

    Welcome home!

Thanks Mallards. Have done that, and am entering their trial in Jan. I'll speak to the main man about it then, but wondered if anyone had any contacts in any gun clubs/shoots as I'd like to get involved asap.

Are most shoots commercial or private in Ireland, or are they run by gun clubs? I've searched google for info, but have come up short.

    Thanks.

Most shoots are gunclubs with very few driven shoots on the island. Roughshooting and wildfowling are King here.

lots of driven shoots too several within an hours drive of north county dublin , lots more if you head down into wicklow a lot of the shoots are syndicates on private ground it'll be a question of knocking on doors chatting to a few keepers and see if they are in need of beaters or pickers up good steady dogs are what's wanted if you have a good dog or two you'll soon fing yourself wanted

Thanks. Is there a good site online that has details of keepers/shoots?

I'm quite keen to pick up lost birds/runners once the shoot has moved on - have done that quite a bit over here, which puts our HPRs to good use on birds that the picking-up dogs have missed.
