    So what makes it into your top 5 beers list? If 5 isn't enough make it a top 10 list. For me at the moment;

    1 Chimay trappist
    2 Paulaner hefeweizen
    3 Leffe blonde
    4 Old Speckled Hen
    5 Duvel

Fine beers there, though I'll never trust Paulaner after it once gave me an unexpected unwarranted hangover (and Hefeweizen isn't my favourite style).

My top 5, this week anyhow ;-)

    1. Dog-fish Head 90 minute IPA (best IPA ever?)
    2. Adnam's Innovation (big hops, but beautifully soft & rounded)
    3. Poperings Hommelbier (ditto, but with something indefinably minerally & moreish!)
    4. Fuller's 1845 (lots of rich sweet flavor, nicely balanced by bitterness)
    5. Brewdog Tokyo Stout (18%!! like nothing else I've tasted)

This past year my top 5 would be :

    Dogheadfish 60 Min IPA
    Brewdog Punk IPA
    Adnams Innovation
    Bitter & Twisted
    Brooklyn Stout

Still not enough hoppy beers locally available on the Irish Market.
My top 5 Next year will be different...

Changes all the time but lately I'd say:

    Fuller's London Porter
    William Bros Midnight Sun
    Brewdow Punk IPA
    Brooklyner Hopfen Weisse
    Odells IPA

    All above available in Drinkstore.ie

    BrewDog Tokyo*
    Cantillon Kriek Bio
    Great Divide Hercules IPA
    Schneider Aventinus
    Galway Hooker

...I look forward to updating this list :)

top 5 in terms of consumption

    Augustiner Helles
    Franziskaner Dunkel Weissbier
    Guinness on Draught
    Franziskaner Weisbier hell
    Spaten Helles

top 5 in terms of lovely-ness, and sort of my desert island shortlist if I had a container to fill with 5 beers to do me over a year

    Augustiner Oktoberfest
Augustiner Edelstoff (if from the wooden barrel, preferably in a beer garden!)
    Augustiner Helles
    Hacker Pschorr Sterne Weisse
    Guinness on Draught

I'd be partial to some of the belgian trappist stuff, love the innis + gunn products, not to mention the Schenkerla and Schneider brewery stuff. Theres so much good beer in the world, but I have named my 5!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 973 ✭✭✭eurokev

    1 Killkenny (so underrated)
2 Bangla , An indian beer
    3 baltika cooler
    4 Carlton Cold
    5 Any O' Haras

Drink smithwicks when im out. Not a fan of mainstream beers, nor wheat but understand why people like these. Work in the industry.People really have to wise up and start trying new drinks to give us more choice in our off licences. I see great beers coming on the market every week and lasting no time because they cant break the monopoly

    You like the Augustiner then?!:D

Never had it before myself. Thats another on my list this weekend. The Chimay trappist ale is beautiful stuff. Especially with a chunk of extra mature cheese, feckin delicious. I had a bottle of the Innis & Gunn oak aged ale & i wasn't sure about it. Lovely smell, the taste is unusual. I prefered the Old Speckled hen. Going to try Hobgoblin ale soon.

    Good list though.:)

Each to his own but I'd find all of them very bland and lacking in flavour, I appreciate that lots of people aren't into beer for the taste just the effect.

I used to drink the usuals like bud, heineken, miller etc up until about a year ago. Now if a person is happy with that stuff, thats fair enough but really its not great beer. Its all about the massive advertising that brainwashes people into getting this stuff week in week out.
Anyway for the last year i have been drinking mostly polish beers, zywiec, tyskie, lech & its fine beer & many times nicer than the usuals. For the last month ive stepped up another level & dived into the world of higher quality beers & its been a bit of a revelation for me. Im appreciating beer on a whole new level.

The thing is if you put a little bit of effort into being a little more selective you can find plenty of great quality beers for cheaper than bud, carling, miller. 3 examples straight away; Leffe blonde - 4 for 5 euro, Hoegaarden 4 for 5 euro, singha beer - 1.25 & any of these beers is way better than that other dishwater.

Theres no going back for me now.

Your so right, mass, constant advertising and not wanting to stand out from your peers keeps people buying the really poor beers, but I think its slowly changing over the last 5 years or so. In Dublin at least, The Porterhouse and newer places have shown people that beer doesn't just have to be barely flavoured fizzy water, the comparison I'd give is going from Budweiser to Sierra Nevada (or most of other peoples lists here) is like graduating from eating Pot Noodles to meals in a top restaurant.

It is. It's nice, but milder than the draught. The Celebration tastes quite a bit like draught Wrasslers.

I think they're going for Bangladeshi rather than Indian. It's made in England, though.

My beer tastes have changed dramatically in the last year I would have said last year my top 5 would have been:

    Bitter and Twisted
    Guinness export
    Fullers London Pride
    Any Westmalle beer.
    Leffe

    Brooklyn East India Pale Ale
    Big Daddy IPA
    Most Brewdog beers.
    Saranac IPA

    Galway Hooker
    Sierra Nevada Bigfoot
    O' Haras IPA

I've had some great Belguim beers but can't really remember what is what so I just stuck with the ones I can get my grubby mitts on regularly.

    1. Isnyer Zunftrat Dunkel (Made by a small brewery in Isny, Baden-Wurttemberg). It's heaven in a glass.
    2. Erdinger Weissbier.
    3. Calwer Eck-Brau Weissbier. Made in the smallest brewery in Stuttgart.
    4. Fuller's London Pride.
    5. Dachsenfranz Kellerbier. Another German beer.

You can probably tell I've been to Germany recently :pac:
