Anyone on here capable of a 20min (+/- a little bit) 1500m OW swim?

And if so how much training do you do? 3-5 sessions? 9-20k?
and what type of training do you do and whats your swimming background?

Im looking to get my swim time down a bit!
    Thanks

Hmm tough to give exact but has ranged from 26 in The Beast of the East tri (tough contitions) to 23ish for Dublin City Tri. (half up stream half down).

Last year for these times I was swimming 2xclub sessions (3ishk) and 1x45mins on my own (not great qulity). Then drop a club swim and do 1-2 ad hoc sea swims come race season instead. (arpox 8k per week last yr)

Started swimming properly about 3yrs ago.

This year I did the following, 9.30mins for 750m, 24mins for 2km, 35mins for 2.5km (rough conditions), 70mins for 5km, 76mins 5km (was very rough seas of Kerry & kinda got lost!!). Going on this, I would imagine I'll do 1500m in sub 20. When I did the 750m I could have gone a lot faster.

OK, so I can go under 20mins, now my background.
12yrs of competitive swimming at national level (Irish team for 2yrs), 13yrs of water polo at national level (again Irish team for 2yrs). This year I got into OW swimming, around June. My training was, 1-2 OW swims a wk, prob did 2km here. Pool based swimming twice a week, swimming sets of 100's and 200's, distance on each swim ~2.5km. Didn’t do massive swim training as I am very swim fit, next yr I'm going to do more training and going to improve on each distance

    Thats pretty good going okane.

So really we were doing a similar amount of swimming but obviously your competitive background is were the difference is. My technique is prob rubbish!
Im hoping to swim 3x1hr club sessions and 1x1hr session on my own. That'll be 4ish hrs and 12km per week. Hoping this will knock a few mins off...

My technique would be very good, which allows me to reduce my stroke count and get maximum return per stroke. When you’re training, what type of sets are you doing? When I'm doing, say 10 x 100m on 1.45 for FS, I'm coming in around 1.11.
I feel, this is were you will get your added speed from. If you go off and do a 1,2km swim in the pool, this will help in your endurance, not your speed.
Another example, when I do swim sets for water polo, I do in a 50m's and 25m's at almost maximum effort. All this helps your speed.

But the best way to improve speed and endurance is technique. Once you have that nailed, your times will come down. Also a massive aid in OW swimming, swimming straight and spotting correctly!!

Ye, looking to concertrate on technique around this time of yr and build endurance n speed come race season. 3 of the sessions are coached so happy enough with the structure. I suppose im just hoping 4hrs in the pool will see my time closer to 20mins.

Must be a few more swimmers around this speed? Whats your training regime like?

I play for Cork. Pending on where you are living, there are teams in Dublin, Drogheda, Limerick, Galway and Belfast. Most of the teams will have their own websites, so if you tell me where you are living, I can list the teams (and their divisions) that would suit you and you can check them out.

Best I did this year in OW swim for a 1500 was 21mins...To be honest dont know how I did it, but few factors were with me as you would have in OW swimming. First it depends on what way the tide is , think it with me up to first bouy, sighting was great....

Train with lads out of my club 4/5 times a week, doing 2.5k/2.7k sessions monday/thursday. Then it was only 2k on fridays. But when the OW swim season was on you'd be doing maybe 6/7 days a week...Training during the week then couple Seaswim at weekend...

Winter training is back down to 4days and maybe a session to improve technique...

Some sessions are 4 sets of

    200m FC
    150m FC
    100m FC
    75m IM
    50m easy

    300 warmup

It all depends on who brings a session really, some are catchup/ some are mostly FC......inbetween IM's

Very few open water swims are measured accurately and conditions for each will be different. If you want to measure progress then you need to do 1500m (or any distance) in the pool and get that time down. What is your best pool time for 1500m??

Ye defo. Never done 1500 tt in the pool but 400tt was 5:47....i suppose you'd be looking for low 5mins to be around 20ish mins for 1.5k?
