Suggested Media Centre/Streaming Solution?

I currently have a PS3 connected up to our TV downstairs and a 500gb external HDD connected to that to enable my family play episodes and films. My main external HDD is connected to my laptop/360 upstairs and is 2TB in capacity. I populate the 500gb HDD with a selection of updated content on a sporadic basis and have recently been making the move towards focusing on 720p .mkv files which neither the 360 or PS3 can handle out of the box.

I'm looking for a solution that can integrate the 2TB drive into the TV downstairs and enable my family to easily play its content yet also allow me to access and add to it over the network (i.e. transfer files from laptop/desktop over to it either automatically or easily).

I was thinking something along the lines of a Popcorn Hour or WDTV Live and connecting it to the TV downstairs and also connecting it by ethernet to my network. This is making the assumption that the devices can be seen as accessible drives on the network, which I'm not sure if they can be.

The PS3 is currently hooked up to an amp via optical out, as is our UPC box but I don't mind ignoring the PS3 altogether as it gets very little use besides watching videos on the external drive.

By no means is that a definitive blueprint and if anyone can suggest anything either more elegant or practical, I'm all ears.

    Yo Adam

I was having the same problem esp with PS3 not handling .mkv files over 4GB. Lately I have started to use 720p & 1080p .mkv files which are about 6GB in size. The best solution I came up with was a WDTV & Ext HDD connected to the HD TV.

Amazon have one for around €100 which is €45 cheaper than P.C.World

Just get some 200mb Powerline Adapters (I have a set of Ciscos I picked up for 90 euros)

Then stream from your Laptop upstairs with the 2TB drive connected, this will also remove the 4GB file restriction for FAT32 as its streaming over NFS.
