Hi , does anybody know if the 183 day rule applies if you return to ireland in say august after years away and start working then? I.e. do you have to pay income tax for that year if you were only in the country for < 183 days?
    thanks.

It does apply - but even though you mightn't be resident in Ireland for tax purposes your Irish source income is still going to be taxed here.
