Would appreciate some advice into what type of car I should consider, looking for a diesel and so far was thinking golf, polo or focus. Have to say right now am leaning towards a golf

    Typical Milage: 800+miles/week
Type of road: Mostly back R type roads of which some are in some state (dreading driving them this winter)

Space: Need some mostly for sports gear etc
    Willing to spend: 10-12k

    Any thoughts?

Spend small money on french diesel saloon. Drive 'till brakes. Repeat.

a 406 or an xantia with the 110bhp 2l hdi

both comfortable cruisers though i would take the xantia with the hydropnumatic suspension over the 406.

as above, drive till breaks. Though the hdi is capable of huge mileages without hiccups

Am thinking of buying an old 97 Xantia, only 100k miles, but is there a lot of problems with the suspension and crank shaft ???

I would buy something a bit older and cheaper than what you are thinking of.

800 miles a week on R roads is pretty big miles and the bad roads won't do a car any favours.

I would look into something like a b5.5 Passat, B6 A4 or maybe one of the French diesels.

You will have a nice bit of comfort and acceptable power, but they should be cheaper to buy and maintain.

You will lose a lot in depreciation on a 10-12k car if you put up 40K a year on it.

My last car was a 96 Xantia. Got rid of it with 250,000 miles done and was going to scrap it. A farmer friend of mine gave me €100 for it for use around the farm. Was in use up to reciently. Fitted one set of suspension spheres while I had it. The best car I ever owned. I now drive a C5.
