Not changing my car any time soon, but one thing that bugs me about it is that it only plays tapes and CD's.

    Its a 2004 plate Avensis.

It doesn't have a standard size stereo slot. Can I upgrade it? I take it I can't buy any standard stereo for it...

You will need somethign like this. http://www.incar-emporium.com/product_info.php?products_id=3659

    or this http://www.adflyer.co.uk/motoring/car-parts-and-accessories/car-accessories/toyota-avensis-t25-double-din-facia-plate-kit-ct23ty05/106931

I am not sure on the actual plugs or what you have to do to get the steering controls to work.

I've renewed my interest in doing this. It seemed too complex when I got your answer Avns1s so I left it. But since I've actually taken off the faceplate so I think I will give it a go if I don't get an answer to this:

Is there any way I can use the existing radio and add a line into it some how? If the CD could play MP3's then I'd be sorted...

(heh, just over a year since I asked the original question)

Send me a picture of your existing radio by p.m. I might have a cd unit that suits.

I've a Clarion unit here, Cd/radio and bluetooth handsfree. It comes pre wired for the control stalk. So all you'll ned is the correct type ISO and an adapter plate. Add €30 to your budget for both of these.

Not that you should rush out and buy a clarion (then again maybe you should) but what i'm getting at is most of the top end brands come prewired for stalk useage.

A radio from an 06-09 model will play mp3/wma discs. Toyota do an ipod interface too as do other companies

Aftermarket single din radios look awful in newer cars,

I don't really follow - are you saying that I can get a 06-09 model radio and put it into my car? That would be nice especially if it had a 3.5mm jack (I don't own an ipod anymore)

06 radio is same shape, has square display instead of rectangular, plays mp3 discs and shows track info

Aux input/ipod control can be got for either radio via the cd changer

Do you mean I can get an Aux input for my current radio?

[edit]After a quick google I found this...http://www.incar-emporium.com/product_info.php?products_id=4439 - Its probably what I'm after? (my car doesn't have a cd changer in the boot)[/edit]
