I was talking to a close friend of mine recently who works in a pub. Apparently the Guards came into the pub and told them they were setting up a checkpoint down the road and for the regulars not to leave for the next hour and ten minutes.

Now I have no proof of this as I wasn't there but there is no reason my friend would make this up. Has anyone heard of anything similar happening?

It really annoyed me when I was told this. Driving without tax or something is one thing, but Guards warning drunk drivers not to drive to avoid being caught really pisses me off as they are not only a danger to themselves but to others on the roads. These people will never learn with an attitude like that from the Guards.

Maybe the Gardai went about their business and returned to catch them all in one go instead of standing in the cold for the hour and ten minutes?:)
Seriously, if a Garda was that bad he'd hardly let the whole pub know so that someone could report it? Also, can't see gardai doing a checkpoint in this weather and not wanting to show some return for it.

It would be highly relevant if you gave us a vague clue as to where in the country this happened. It sounds more rural than urban and I suspect one or other of the Gardai didn't want to encounter one of his mates.

No need to mention the name of the pub.

What they really meant was that they were setting up the checkpoint in 1h 20m, and wanted to ensure nobody left before then. :D

Maybe the point is to keep the pub in business?

Maybe the point is to keep the pub in business?

    By facilitating drunk drivers?
