Tax on your Gas Bill

I noticed on my bill from Bord Gais yesterday that when they are calculating your amount due, they itemise all your charges, total them and then add on the VAT at the end.

However, included in the charges that are itemised is a charge for Carbon Tax. It was always my understanding that you can't charge tax on a tax and it seems Bord Gais are charging VAT on Carbon Tax. Is this allowed?

Yes, happens all the time. VAT is applied to the cost of products that include excise duty.

Alcohol: (cost + excise duty) *1.21 VAT

    and so on........
